All I want for my new boat and VHF is a MMSI number from OFCOM.This number is provided by Spectrum who's data processing seems incapable of registering my details.
After trying many times to register on line,I phoned to dictate my details to them and told after a hour would be able to log in. Oh no you can't, I then try to check my password but
I have to type unreadable words to access my challenge word before I can find my password, again without any success so I have given up.Any one got a spare MMSI number.

You seem to be confused.

You need a Ship Station License to legally install and use your VHF. The MMSI number comes as part of this.

There's no such organisation as "Spectrum". I think you're referring to the Spectrum Licensing Department at Ofcom.

I don't know why you're unable to use the Ofcom licensing website. It's always seemed relatively clear and easy to use to me, and I've never known it to be down.

I believe they still operate a paper-based service, for a fee, for people who for whatever reason cannot deal with the technology. Maybe that would be more appropriate?

Nobody will legitimately be able to give you a "spare" MMSI number.

Pete

EDIT: Here is the paper form, which you could print and send: http://licensing.ofcom.org.uk/binaries/spectrum/ships-radio/of347.pdf . I don't think you need to be logged in to download it, but let me know if you can't access it and I will host a copy on my server.

Not heard any complaints about registering with OFCOM or updating licences on line recently.

I the past people have always found them helpful when telephoning too.

I just logged in no bother!

Sounds as though he is not already registered with OFCOM and for some inexplicable reason failing to do so.

Exactly, that's the situation as I understand it, and to which I responded in my reply. I don't know why you think I might be confused.

Only problem we had with the ofcom website is you can only have one account registered at the same postcode and door number.

After a phone call we created the account using our nabours door number, then update the address after registering.

Cos you told him , as I did initially, a whole load of stuff I am sure he already knows

You need a Ship Station License to legally install and use your VHF - may already know, but did say "all I want is an MMSI". Knowing that he actually needs a Ship Station License may help him navigate the site more effectively.

There's no such organisation as "Spectrum" - suspected he had read "Contact Spectrum Licensing" at the bottom of the page and imagined a separate organisation, much like the issuing of operator's certificates is farmed out to the RYA.

I believe they still operate a paper-based service - may actually help solve his problem, since he appears to have difficulty with technology.

Nobody will legitimately be able to give you a "spare" MMSI number - he said "anybody got a spare". Alright, maybe sarcasm born of frustration, but in just case he really was thinking of putting in any old number.

You need a new licence if the boat is new to you, You cannot transfer the licence from your previous boat to it. Nor can the previous owners licence be transferred to you.

The callsign however should remain with the boat if it previously had a ship's licence, also the old MMSI number if one was previously allocated.

When you apply for the new licence you will be asked for the existing call sign and AFAIK the existing MMSI number .

If the boat did not have a ship's licence you will be allocated a new callsign and if it did not previously have a DSC radio you will be allocated a new MMSI number

You should have cancelled the licence for your old boat and the previous owner should have cancelled his licence for your new bot

That's odd. Both my wife and I have separate Ofcom licensing accounts registered at the same postal address. We had no problem setting those up.Just logged into my account and the system is working fine.
I have had 2 boats registered during changeover. Same address but different logon details.
