I have recently changed my old VHF set for a Standard Horizon DSC radio.
Can anyone tell me the correct procedure for applying for an MMSI number.
Having looked on RA website it does not look as if you can make ammendments to your licence on-line (has to be printed off and sent)- or is it easier/quicker to phone them.

You're dead right, snailmeister. I've had a drink - it's obviously affected my eyes! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Still, the manual link may come in handy for some. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

We emailed them to get our mmsi added to the radio license and, can I add that if you already have a radio license and call sign for your boat, then you should use the existing license instead of creating a new one.

But your existing licence is for an ordinary Vhf which you no longer have so there is no point in 'adding' your new set. You cancel your Vhf licence and apply for a Dsc licence using the same details and call sign, nothing else changes. Hey presto correctly licenced and all done on the Internet in 5 minutes.

Not so - you should have retained your original call sign (did you?). You can amend your details on line and add an MMSI number to your call sign. The call sign stays with the boat irrespective of change in name or ownership.

Does not the phrase in my post ..."using the same details and call sign, nothing else changes..." not make it clear?

I did retain my call sign and it is still allocated to the same boat and it is still my name on the licence. But it now has no VHF set on it and it does have a DSC set on it with a MMSI number

Have you actually tried this yourself? If you amend your licence to add a DSC set, it does not issue you a MMSI number to your existing licence - I tried it - there is no provision for "adding" an MMSI number. Whether this is just a glitch in a pretty glitchy website or not I don't know.

I beg to differ, did just that two weeks ago, ammend your existing licence on line and when you get to equipment details add a dsc vhf. What you will find however is your updated licence takes several hours to be uploaded, I printed off mine the next day and it had an MMSI number on it.

Yes, regularly. Not only do I do it for our boats I do it on line for clients boats. You don't have to cancel anything, you simply amend the details on the existing license and when you print the license out it has had the MMSI number allocated.

I must have done this now a dozen times or more. Plus I register clients on line and do all the work for them. Takes about 5 minutes. The most recent was tracking down an original calls sign on a boat that the previous owner had canceled, change the name of the boat, the owners name and had an MMSI issued all to the same call sign.

In one instance I was registering for an owner and the system went down, when it came back up I was told the email address I had put in had already been registered and I could go no further. A quick call to Ofcom, who are in fact very helpful sorted out the problem and away we went. The new owner had no details, I used the old "tax disc" info to track it back and had it sorted.

We also have a group MMSI number for the school, that took slightly longer to arrange but it's now done.

Your clients must think you're wonderful to give you all their log in details. Certainly different from my experience of the Ofcom site - it seems to offer different experience for all it's users.

Anyway, I now have a licence with all the correct details on, including an MMSI number which I certainly didn't obtain through the amending route.
