My trusty ICOM M1 Euro V, H/H has been sent back to ICOM for repair.........the bill is £102.79. inc £55 labour charge.

Primarily used as a back up, dinghy, jetski work etc

For that money I could buy a new one-albeit a different make.

What should I do ?

Any suggestions ?

Oh, and I'll need it by Thursday, which ICOM can do.

Get a new radio with new battery (cause that'll need changing next), and a year or two's warranty.

Pay for it on plastic and if it meets with a horrible ending on the first outing you should be covered on the card's insurance.

You don't say how old the ICOM is, and I don't know if that model is high spec or not, but my instinct would be to invest that money (and a touch more) in a new one. You can get quality hh's from reputable brands for under £150, and good brands like Standard Horizon for a lot less than that.

I had two of them, Adrian and both went the same way. Not so "trusty" then.
There are small screws in the corner which dont have enough plastic to keep them in place - eventually break.

I gave up and threw them away.

My "trusty H/H" is now and has been over the last 4 years is the Standard Horizon - built like a brick ?hit house.

Personally, I wouldnt buy another Icom anyway.
We upgraded a load of sets to Icoms at the sailing club a few years ago and the quality of the audio was nothing like the old ones.

The Standard Horizon kit is made by Yaesu who have been building radio equipment for decades.

The Standard Horizon H/H also comes with a dry cell battery pack that can go in your grab bag so that you can always have power for it.
