Anyone had a go?

I've got some stainless welding to do, fairly chunky, does not need to be pretty and not especially critical.

Worth having a go with a pack of 308 rods?

Yes. I have good success welding stainless driveshafts with an arc welder with stainless rods...and In no welder

Yes go for it!
I have a standard manual arc welder(stick). I have fabricated various items using stainless rods, but only above 2 mm thickness.
Below 2 mm I go to community "men's shed" workshop which is blessed with a good TIG welding plant.
Watch out for the slag! SS slag tends to ping off at high velocity as the weld cools. Unlike welding carbon steel where you can lift your visor as soon as you stop welding, keep your face covered for 30-60 seconds after finishing.
