Need a bit of help please.
I have a 40hp Mariner outboard circa 1990's
I believe it's a ex coastguard or RNLI
It does not have a oil resevoir, so you just mix it in the tank.
I've been told it's 100:1 mix, can anyone confirm this, as it seems quite a lean mixture

Most modern 2 strokes quote 100:1. However, in the handbook that came with my Yamaha (which has 100:1 stickers on it), they advise that if used professionally ie fishing boats etc you should use 50:1.

To sum up, if you want it to last a long time, use 50:1. It might smoke a bit more, but it will be better lubricated. (Might be worth carrying spare spark plugs and a plug spanner too, just in case!

Some outboards can be run at 100:1 but 50:1 is usually the safe mix for any from 1970 onwards.

You could always consult the owners manual which you should be able to download from the Download Center at Brunswick Marine if you have mislaid your original.

For a 1990 model 50:1 does appear to be correct

i had two of these on a 5m rib - fanstic engines, mine were both ex RNLI, like above 100: is the norm, but i used 50:1 as they did, ran fine, a little smokey at first, but its a great smell
