Got given a bottle of Pussers rum for Christmas. Don't like the stuff, prefer gin. So got to wondering what the proportions were for Georgian era naval grog. I think I read somewhere it was 1 part rum, 4 parts water, lemon juice and something else. Anybody have the recipe?

If you must mix it with something, try this:

A good two fingers of rum
mash up some fresh chopped mint (not much) with a quartered lime, one heaped teaspoon of demerara sugar and some crushed ice

Put it all into one glass and enjoy

if that doesn't work for you then you must be mixing it wrong and I will have to come round and show you how to drink it :D

Hmm

Not only do I not really like rum, I am sorry to say I have never got the taste of single malt either. Prefer a pint of a good IPA, or a pink gin with extra bitters. Sorry, can not help being a cretin:)
Younger two sons did two bottles of my single malt over Christmas, Rum on boat for guests. If you are around the East Coasts you are welcome to a tot or three.
So no help on 18thC grog then?

You cannot get the 'real' pussers rum anymore - so 4-1 with water wouldn't be the same...the stuff sold as Pussers Rum is a pale imitation according to my taste buds and memory.

If you want some fine rum then get a bottle of Ron Zacapa Centinario.

Sipping some right now as it happens.

But if you must!

Apparently according to some really old (who remember the tot) mariners OVD is the only one readily available which is quite palatable. ;)

Yep!... the true / old Pussers is no longer available….. thank heavens (bad time when I was nineteen in Gib).

Mixed with blackcurrant cordial & I’ll sing sea shanties and swap stories with the best! :D

Mind you Pussers is supplied by the same blenders as supplied the RN an are liscensed by the RN to call it Pussers and a payment is made to the tot fund for every bottle sold.

Woods 100 was always considered in the Submarine service as a respectable substitute for the real thing, after the official issue ended.

I had the great priviledge of sharing a last tot with two WW2 S Boat skippers who were guests of my skipper for a last tot.

From the Pussers rum website http://www.pussers.com/t-rum-history.aspx :

On the Origin of "Grog" and Vernon's Orders

Over the centuries, the amount of rum changed from time to time. Prior to 1740, Pusser's Rum was issued to the men neat, that is without water. They received 1/2-pint twice daily! Admiral Vernon (pictured at right), the hero of Portobello and the Commander-in-Chief, West Indies Station was very much concerned with what he called the swinish vice of drunkenness which he believed was caused by the men drinking their daily allowance of rum neat, that is without water. He believed that if the same amount of rum was mixed with water, and then consumed that it would reduce drunkenness and discipline problems for which the punishment could be brutal. Thus he issued his infamous Order to Captains No. 349 on August 21, 1740. His order stated that the daily allowance of rum "be every day mixed with the proportion of a quart of water to a half pint of rum, to be mixed in a scuttled butt kept for that purpose, and to be done upon the deck, and in the presence of the Lieutenant of the Watch who is to take particular care to see that the men are not defrauded in having their full allowance of rum... and let those that are good husband men receive extra lime juice and sugar that it be made more palatable to them."

The sailors, or "Jack Tars" had affectionately nicknamed Admiral Vernon "Old Grog" from the "grogram" cloak he often wore on the quarter deck. The watered rum gave great offence to the men, and soon they began referring to it contemptuously as "Grog" from the name they'd already provided Admiral Vernon. Thus, true Grog is Pusser's Rum and water with lime juice and sugar
