I have inadvertantly mixed Mercury Premium (Brown) and Mercury High Performance (Blue) in the gearbox of an 8 HP OB engine (Used as aux on Sailing Boat).

Mercury says this a No No.

Anyone know whether this is true and reason?

I am considering whether to change it today but don't really want to if I don't need to.

I am taking boat up to mooring today so sorry if I don't reply.

If Mercury say this is a NO NO there must be a reason. Therefore change it. The volume involved is small and it is hardly a major job.

BTW did you know that failing to change the sealing washers on the drain and filling plugs is said to be the major cause of water ingress into outboard gearcases.

I always use ordinary EP 90 gear oil!

Try putting your question about incompatibility on the Mercury board at iBoats
