I am not an expert, but AFAIK the fence is still there, and a case has been put forward that the quay should be registered as a "Public Green" or something like that.

It is I believe somewhere in the legal process.

I gather that local yachtsmen still go alongside, but you have to take your own ladder, and let the landlord of the Thorn know in advance, and he will meet you with his ladder so you can get to the pub. :D

I sailed up to it this summer for the first time, and turned at the quay on the tide- it was a real pity to have to just go back down river - what a place for bit of dredging, a few pontoons and access to the shore. It would make a wonderful overnight destination and bring quite a bit of money to the town. Such a shame.

A little update on what is happening on the quay

Mistley Quay: The Mystery of the Frame!

A mystery is afoot in Mistley, and once again the tranquil and historic picture views across the river can be enjoyed – as a hole has been cut in the 2 metre high fence and a picture frame added, but who exactly is in ‘the frame’ for this action is, as yet, unknown!

Although the question has been raised, because of local planning constraints placed earlier this year preventing any alteration to the fence from taking place without planning permission being sought, the fence’s owners, Trent Wharfage Logistics Limited, are powerless to remove it!

Tendring Council’s cabinet member for planning, Carlo Guglielmi, said the hole in the fence had been there since a planning directive was issued last month!

The controversial fence, which had been erected virtually overnight in 2008 has caused uproar locally as it has prevented the quay from being used, both by the local townfolk and visiting yachtsmen. In addition to this the local inhabitants of Mistley are seeking to have the area recognised as a ‘village green’ thereby securing their right of access.

However at this time the local Council are not involving themselves in the dispute about the fence itself saying ‘The Council is satisfied that the company which owns and operates the port is required by health and safety to have some form of barrier along the quay edge and the Council is not involved in the dispute over whether the quay is public land or not.’
