Missippi

Hello

Has anyone got any stories to tell about sailing the Missippi? Me and my other half were taking a year out to do some sailing, starting at Guatemala then up north towards Mexico etc. I can find lots of information about sailing Guatemala, Belieze, Mexico etc but can't find a great deal on the Missippi (apart from Steam Boats!) or sailing the South US. If any one could point me to any good websites, it would be most appreciated.

Do an google search which will get more results if you spell it like this "Mississippi"

A book

"Old Glory" by Jonathan Raban is a book about descending the Mississippi from Minneapolis/St Paul to the gulf, in a 16 ft aliminium skiff with an outboard. I seem to remember he felt that mixing it with 'pusher' tug boats and trains of barges was a tad buttock-clenching.

there is a 'great circle' going north along coast, down great lakes around michigan , down to chicago and then doing the missouri/mississippi down to guld of mexico. a jet ski did it several years ago, so you could also. miss. runs south with good current. would recomend going with current, esp under sail.

Try typing into Google "Mississippi River Pilots".

Its a start. Get a map and type in areas and towns you'll get lots of info then.

I vaguely thought about this until I read Mark Twain's "Life on the Mississippi" recently. Now I understand why those paddle steamers were so powerful, shallow draft and flat bottomed - and why the pilots were so well paid.

But it must be possible in a suitable motor boat, as there are marinas all along the length, see for example <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.heartlandboating.com/marinas-miss.htm>HERE</A>.

See "Paddle to the Amazon". I'm sure that they went down the Mississippi.

12 000 mile paddle from Canada to the mouth of the Amazon. And not the shortest route either. Great book.

Cheers thats Perfect, just the sort of thing I was looking for!

If anyone knows of any other sites like this, sailing in a western Caribean area then they could let me know of it would be much appreciated.
