Missing Johnson outboard tell-tale?

I'm tinkering with an old Johnson 'Sea-Horse' outboard (model no. BE4BRLCOB) built 1985. I've taken it apart - head off etc. and cleaned out the waterways as it was totally clogged. For the life of me I can't see a tell-tale i.e. one of those little squirts of water to reassure you that cooling water is flowing. The path of the cooling water just seems to be 'up a tube from the inlet, round the block (both around the cylinders and round the head) then back through the casing and down into the leg' (along with the exhaust).
So.. the question is - have I missed something obvious or is there just no tell-tale? Perhaps I should be looking for water coming out of the exhaust holes for example? Someone will know I'm sure.

I know on the early Seahorse engines that if you tested the engine in a drum of water you would get no stream of cooling water from the engine. This is due to the turbulence caused by the propeller. As you have guessed the answer is to run the engine in the tub without the prop and you should get the water stream.
Hope this helps.

I have recently replaced the impeller in my 3hp Evenrude (same motor as Johnson) and can confirm the tell tale is a spray effect from 6 small holes in the aft face of the leg just below the swivel support.

I have some photographs of the innards of the water pump and gear box if they would be helpful. Pls PM with email address.
