And a bit of a where is it?

Anyone care to enlighten us on what's going on here.

For those who haven't been there, this is looking upstream and there is a shallow sandbar to the left of the port hand marks.

Not misleading at all.
This is the entrance to the Yealm.
The leaders help keep you clear of Mouthstone ledge, the chart clearly shows that if you hold the leaders you will go over the end of the bar.

Well yes indeed it's the Yealm and like other leading marks you are not expected to hang on to the transit forever. Indeed if you did you would go bump on the granite /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Leading marks are only meant as a guide in until the pilotage bouys can be seen.

This is from Chart5011's old post on the yealm.... I'm guessing it's the same port hand mark taken from ashore.

Yes, these are the same buoys (both just visible) taken from the cliffs.

With the small distance saved and the danger of the unmarked Slimers, I'll stick to the outside I think.

Mind you, I also go through the beacons of the Bridge when it would be perfectly safe to pass to the West at HW.

It doesn't dry, but being an uneven rocky bottom I wouldn't like to quote any soundings I found, don't stray too far north of the transit, you may see the seagulls apparently walking on water!

The leading marks will keep you north of the Slimers. I sometimes think that some transits to keep you east of them when approaching from the south would be more use than worrying about the Yealm ledge, after all it does have a bl**dy great cliff behind it!

(btw I did many years ago ground on the concrete block W of the Bridge so now make sure if not between the marks I am near one of the dolphins!)

I use Rame Head clear of the Little Mewstone as a transit to keep me clear of the Slimers.

Looking to the West from the Bridge at low springs the only thing visible is a table-shaped structure about 200 yds away. The East side looks like shark's teeth!

I all's went out round yer Mewstone thing when I lived in Plymuth m'ders an I is still ere see! There's old sailors and bold sailors but not many old bold sailors.......
Saw a gert big yacht wi a keely thing follow an urdy gurdy fishin boat thru there once an got a severe case o gravel rash on er bottom she did...... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I'll tell you my secret transit - so long as you don't tell anyone else!

On Mouthstone Point hillside is a White rectangular board with a speed limit on it. If you line this up with the top of the two leaders you will clear the Outer Slimmers by about 20-30 metres (very close). Keep transits slightly open to seaward and you'll be fine.

This is a very handy transit and I'll try to remember to take some pics next time I'm near by.

Me too. Though I often think that a mark set below Wembury Church Tower would make a suitable, and easy, clearing transit for strangers.
