Can any of you please tell me what the sail areas are for the mirror offshore mk1 and mk2. The boat is comming on now but I still have no sails, The cost of re- doing the standing rigging, running rigging and the deck hardware for the rigging, plus the cost of a basic suit of sails is becomming prohibitive. I'm thinking of going down the junk rig road. The boats 30 yr old so i'm loath to invest heavily in it. Any one any views on the matter? I m only sailing around the Abersoch area and not planning any major cruises.

Bite the bullet and buy a new set of sails.Any of the sailmakers will have the dimensions on file and the cost for main and jib for these small sails will not be prohibitive. I found Seateach good.Boat will then be properly balanced.Do you have a MKI or II?The Mark I has the mast step adjacent to the main hatch, the mark II has it further forward.
You will also need a reliable outboard because if you get caught with tide and light wind against you, you will need it to make progress.
I would also get the standing rigging made.Deck fittings because the forces
of these small sails are light can be bolted straight through the deck or cabin with a ply backing plate. My mirror makes do with wooden cleats.Running rigging can be any cheap rope.
These are great little boats and worth spending a little money on.
I cannot seem to glean your email address fro the profile. If you pm me with it
I can send you some articles/diagrams which you may find interesting.

Thanks to corkonian1 and mike 27 for the help. My boats a MK1 I've got the mast, boom and furling gear. Info todate suggest the mk1 rig does'nt sail well. so the cost of replacing or indeed finding a mk2 rig was why I was considering coverting to a junk rig. The boat is strictly for pottering fishing and keeping out of the way. So i'll keep looking around before making any decisions

The sail area of the Mk 1 was 122sq ft. The Mk 2 ser 152sq ft.

The Mk 2 was built from about 1980 onwards so if yours is 30 years old it is probably a Mk1. The masthead, step and rig positions were quite different between the two so you need to know which model you have. It may be possible to convert one to the other but that is beyond my knowledge. The Mk 2 is a significantly better sailing boat than the Mk1 so if you can add the extra sail area (taller mast) it is worth it.

I would not recommend a junk rig.It requires an unstayed mast which must be keel stepped and the coachroof must be strengthened to take the sideways loadings.

Thanks for the help mine is definately a mk1 the mast is stepped just forward of the hatch and rigged to the cabin sides. The unfortunate part is that it has passed through many hands. I've aquired it as a project boat. All the deck fittings ,inc. mast step are missing there are no sails. I have a mast, boom and furling gear. The prop shaft and rudder. The hull is in good condition but stripped out of everything. So youcan see where i was comming from with regard to the junk rig. The cost re-instating the mk1 rig is considerable if i go for the mk2 rig i will have to re-ballast, obtain and reposition the mk2 mast to the forward end of the cabin. So if you know of anyone with spares for a Mirror Offshore I would be glad of the info. Thanks
