I've found a Mirage 2700 that looks nice but before I travel a couple of hundred miles to look at it, does anyone have any comments, good or bad, about them?

What we want is;
Standing headroom in the saloon and decent headroom in the fore cabin.
At least one decent sized double berth
Room to fit a shower
Heads you don't have to be a midget or contortionist to use
Reasonable performance (no real worries there, one left me like I was standing still and pointing 20 degrees higher than me at the weekend.)
Bilge or lift keel.
Maximum 30ft and no more than £25,000

The other boats on the shortlist are;Westerly Merlin (SWMBO loves the heads and after cabin), Konsort, Trapper 500, Moody 27 or 29.

Any others to add?

We've decided this is going to be a boat to enjoy on the East Coast, maybe round Britain then, in a few years, go long term cruising on.

Comments welcome.

I chartered one as a lad with a mate many moons ago and we found it fine space wise for two fairly largish teenagers for a week. Certainly had near-enough standing headroom and despite bilge keels sailed ok. As far as my weak memory can recal is seems more or less fit your bill.

I was looking for a similiar type boat and in the end found a Verle 900 which ticked all the boxes although it was an 82 model, very spacious boat

The Mirage will not tick all your boxes, at 25.5 ft long ( the 2700 refers to the weight in kg ) a shower is not very practicable. The fore cabin is OK if you are not to tall and head room is about 5ft 11. They do sail well and are roomy for there size. Have a look on the snapdragon and mirage owners site and the leisure owners site (leisure 27sl). For that sort of money I would look at the Mirage 29 which will tick all of your boxes.

A pal has the Moody 29 and I must say the sailing performance is impressive - better than the more modern Moody 31 or the Sadler 29 for example. Accomodation is good.

We had a Leisure 27SL which as Toad says is the same boat, badged for Leisure and normally with Red livery instead of Blue. Cracking boat with a nice modern feel but also as Toad says, its LOA is only 25.5 ft. It has a transom hung rudder. The head which is adjacent to the forecabin, is quite cramped and does not have any openable port. The forecabin door closes off either the head or saloon. I wouldn't have thought it feasible to fit a shower in there. The forecabin would be the only double.
Sorry, I can't help much on the other boats you mention, other than being impresssed by the Merlin when we took a look once.

You can keep an eye on the Salterns Stag 28 Discussion Group . There is one currently for sale there in Holland. If you cannot get access send me your details and I will email the details to you.

If you are feeling adventurous there was a brand new hull & deck together with some other bits & pieces for completion mentioned on this forum a few weeks ago for £3000

Similar specs when I was looking 3 yrs ago. Ended up with a Moody 29 as best all round for me- big saloon with drop down table up and pretty good head room- it is only just under 30' tho-9.04m. Also looked at and liked Konsort and Sadler 29. I think you'd find the Moody 27 a little small . Moody 28 is a more modern boat & a good sail, but price probably above 25K. Also looked at a Mirage 28, which was quite a nice boat and should be able to purchase a decent one well below 20K- Sadler, Konsort and M29 probably around 25K mark for c. 25yo boat in decent condition.

I have a mirage 2700 so I'm biased however am very happy with her, so she is not for sale :-) Heads are on the small side so no room for shower. Headroom is a bit limited in the forecabin but personally I have never had an issue with it and I'm 6ft. Main saloon is 5 11 but one again I have never noticed it as you can always stand under the hatch with plenty of room. I like the galley layout and the saloon in general, its plenty big enough compared to other boats this size (25ish ft). Personally in your situation I would probably go for the 27ft moody, never heard a bad thing said about them except the price, if not then you wont go wrong with a well found mirage2700.

Also to correct a previous poster the 2700 is the loa they just count the transom hung rudder in the figure rather than the hull length of 25.5ft

Thanks all. Very useful info.

At the weekend we'll be doing the rounds of the brokers, starting with a Mirage 29 in Levington, then a Konsort and a Mirage 28 at Tollesbury, a Merlin in Fambridge and hopefully have a look at a Stag in Burnham. There's a Sadler 29 at Shotley but we can't fit it all in one day.

And yes, I have thought about a Cobra 850 but swmbo took one look at one on the net and dismissed it. No reason, just 'Don't like it'!

Check out the latest issue (September 08) of Practical Boat Owner Pages 29 - 32.. Several suggestions there for you

NOT the lifting keel version - so tender you'll get your feet wet sitting on the rail! The fin is very different tho.
