Since I came to the Med, I've noticed that on the hottest of days there is a 1/4" each side of the cockpit where the teak (on steel deck) has moved away as the boat (steel) has expanded.

Now rough calculation is that on such days said boat is about 2" longer (LOD 14.6m), though it looks more ;-)

She was built in Marseilles, and I guess the time of year that the frames were lofted and plates were cut would have been much colder. Most of my paint seems to be able to stretch ok...

I wondered if there was a nominal temperature that designers used when they made up their 'cutting lists' or whatever?

One other thing, aluminium has different coeff of therm exp to steel, so how much does the rigging tension vary. Set up in UK @18C, hot days here 35C (and my masts are painted black). I can see a bend...
