A taster - sunset in Dale

Dalesunset600x451.jpg

The upper reaches of the haven are really lovely - my son has his boat at Lawrenny where there is good food and drink to be had. Out to Skomer during the Shearwater or Puffin season is a must - stunning scenery. If you want to try drying out against a wall then Solva is great.

Lovely beaches at Angle and Whatick (?sp) Bay.

Not sure about the pool at Pembroke. Quite a few Milford forumites but perhaps on the Scutt rather than here.

Have fun.

We hope to get up to Pembroke Castle pool in the Spring.

I have studied the channel and although there is some buoyage it doesn't seem very exact so I might take some pictures at low water to try and familiarise myself for when we take the boat up. I also need to find out the details of the lock keeper and what notice he requires.

There are lots of lovely places located within the haven, Dale has a tidal inner pontoon which has walk ashore access to the land (removed for the winter). There is also an all tide pontoon off Dale but you will need a dinghy to get ashore (in place all year).

Next to Dale is Castlebeach bay which is an anchorage with a small shingle beach. Its usually quite sheltered except for wind from the East or South east.

Along again is Watwick which can get very busy in the summer but has a really nice beach.

Another nice anchorage is Long Oar bay which is just down from the LNG terminal and located at the mouth of Sandy haven.

Angle has a nice pub but personally next time we visit I would take my chances on a mooring rather than anchor as we have dragged here a few times.

Further up haven there are moorings and a tidal walk ashore pontoon at Burton (pontoon removed for winter). There is also a pub/restaurant here called the Jolly sailor which serves really good food.

Lawrenny is another favourite with a walk ashore pontoon (not sure if its there all year).

Further up the river there is Llangwm and Black tar which are private moorings (as far as im aware).

Out of the haven is Skomer island which is brilliant in late Spring with all the Puffins.

Its not to bad depending on your draft and the die. The main problem is coordinating getting into the pool over the barage as its not always open. The port authority have a leisure guide whch i think you can download and has the contact details for the barage.

http://www.seafairhaven.org.uk/uploaded/docs/Appendix.pdf is a link to an extract from the 2010 captains handbook for Seafair which is a sailing event. iot has a chartlet of the Pembrokes River and the Pool at the castle. If you need more info re the depths in hte pool give pembrokeshire county council a call as it is in their remit and they owne the moorings in the pool.

If your a bit uncertain about going up on your todd the West wales maritime heritage society do a river rally each year and a small flotilla is lead up by one of their vessels

Like Matt341 mentions there are a few pontoon and alongside those are a few good pubs. The doghouse (lawrenny arms), Jolly sailor, ferry inn, Point house, griffin etc.

If your looking to do a fair bit of cruisin gin the area there is quite a usefull book by Tom bennet, (a sea guide to pembrokeshire coastline) which give loads of info about the surrounding coastline aswell as the waters up to Haverfordwest.

Out of interest what has brought on the move from cardiff to Milford??

Have a look at our blog, Ishtar in my signature. We spent the last two summers in Milford, One at Llangwm and one at Dale.

Beautiful place to cruise.

Have a look at the seafairhaven.org.uk website. i think that the attachemnts for the captains handbook are still on line and there is a chart of the river bouyage and the pool at pembroke. The barrage is county council owned so you'll need to contact them for info. Contact details are in the Port authority Leisure users guide available at mhpa.co.uk. This also gives some of the local byelaws shows the location of seasonal pontoons pubs etc so is worth a read. There is also a very useful book by Tom Bennett - a sea guide to the pembrokeshire coast. covers the entire haven and the surrounding coast of the county including jack and ramsey sounds.

The west wales maritime heritage society organise the pembroke river rally each year and guide vessels up to the pool and back which is useful for those less familiar with the channels up there. Feel free to message me or contact me in the Milford Port authority offices if you have any queries

To add to waterranger's post, the Tom Bennett book "A Sea Guide to the Pembrokeshire Coastline" is well worth buying. The ISBN number is 0 9512114 7 1 and the publisher is the splendidly named Happy Fish.

I have two copies and remember buying the second from the Neyland Marina shop last year. If you're seriously thinking of coming to Pembrokeshire it should be at the top of your list of things to get. It includes notes on the Pembroke River.

Here's a a picture of Tom aboard Ishtar, with my missis in September:

Tom lived in Pembs for many years and worked as for the environment agency. He's sailed the area for many years, dived it and written 6 wreck books, and kayaked many of the beaches and headlands.

He's a lovely chap. Louise and I got into sailing after spending 2 weeks aboard Tom's 44ft Ketch, the Perky Puffin in Italy and Greece in 2007. He'd sailed it there from Indonesia, much of it single handed.

And the book is excellent. Published by Imray now, IIRC.

Milford

I think that given a choice then Milford Haven beats Cardiff hands down.
