Mildly irritated with London and Gray - a small warning

Lonton & Gray have just laundered our genoa, cut and resplined the luff, replaced the UV strip and fitted telltales with quick service, at a very reasonable price (significantly less than quoted elsewhere) and they talked me out of having work done to the sail that I wanted but Ian reckoned would be a waste of money. So I'm a happy customer. Just sayin;. :)

We use John Parker (One Sails) at Levington for this service, because they built the (excellent) sails, we're berhed there and we're too lazy to lug heavy sail bags around. I tested their price per kg for washing and inspecting against Sail Medic this year, and found P&K considerably cheaper.

Each time you leave a job with P&K, they send an email confirming precisely what you have asked them to do, so no room for confusion.

Why do people bother to have their sails washed? All it does is knacker them even faster IMHO. After all it's not like they are socks or something.

It's not beyond the skill of the average numpty to check over their own sails and repair the odd bit of broken stitching etc.

Probably a hangover from the days of cotton sailcloth.

Morning Mike, a tough of gout this morning

That would of course depend on weather the sails have been left up to long .
We have seen thick green algae ,black mould, squashed and live wasps ,bird poo ,vomit and various other things I d rather not mention .
Of course ,if you have space big enough to wash and check them over, fine ,but a lot of people don't even have a clean flat area suitable to attend to the washing, let alone the repairs .
Thats why sailmakers offer the service .
Mostly with free storage until they are needed ,to save having damp sails down below encouraging condensation and mould on the precious interior .
Happy Christmas

The repair should have been suggested and a price agreed, what if it was a sail you were thinking of replacing? Then you've been forced to spend three hundred quid that would have gone toward the new one? Irrespective of the scenario the principle of checking first before you triple the bill is pretty important.

Lisa, I feel your pain regarding work not agreed in advance but would humbly suggest not too much of a wrong doing for a YBW flaming for the company.

They probably thought you'd pleased to get your sails back, tip top condition, ready to go for 2017. It's 'cause you've got a big boat.....money no object, etc.....;-)

If they'd have taken your sails, payment up front for servicing and not returned them, I'd say that's grounds for a YBW lynchmob!

(Try again. Why does this forum always delete a reply with quote when you try to edit it?)

Anyway, I just wanted to say that I agree wholly with Cindy's view, and I've never even vomited on a sail in over 60 years' sailing.

actually, I agree and did think twice before posting. However, I stand by my 'small warning'. I clearly made a mistake when leaving the sails, and that's my lesson learned. But what irritated me more was the lack of customer service when I (firstly) emailed them and then when I called. When I said that the sails were old and that i would have liked to consider hard if I wanted to spend money on the strip, they just told me that there was another good five years in them. Not really the point.
