Can anybody give me advice on how to get rid of mildew in the headlining of my maxum 3000 scr, and what needs to be done to stop it happening again, it seems to be at the edges of the headlining which is of a fabric material. Thanks

I had a similar problem with the fuzzy lining in my Maxum 2100sc. I used a carpet cleaner, and with some help from a VAX just wet it, and sucked it through a couple of times, and it seemed to clear it. In the end I had to leave the front escape hatch slightly open plus those crystals that collect water, to stop it. Had I been a member of the forum then, I would have known to use a dehumidifier or small greenhouse heater tube to keep things from getting damp. (although the odd dehumidifier sorts out the damp problems once and for all by setting fire to things, allegedly).

I am sure someone will have a better solution!

you need something to kill the mildew spores. Bathroom stuff designed to stop the problem in showers will do it, but be careful that it does not change the colour of the material.

I have had some success using a steam cleaner, but again it needs to be done with care, and tried on a bit of the material that doesnt show first.

You can use Milton, the stuff that's used to sterilise babies bottles or alternatively as I do, dissolve a couple of aquatabs/cleantabs/puriclean in a small amount of water. Wipe over the mildewed area wth a sponge and leave for a little while, which will kill the spores. Then use a cleaner of your choice to clean the area.

Steve.

Starbright's Mildew stain remover is the dogs b**"!>s at removing just what it says on the bottle, if all else fails then give it a try.

Did a very mildewed canopy that looked like new after & not much effort required. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I had the same isue a few yrs ago and used dettox mould and mildew remover. It has bleach in but it didnt harm the fabric. I left it a couple of days and it vanished, bought some the other day for my canopy and did a good job.

Nick.

Best is not to get midew in the first place. I never have it on my boat. Exept maybe on bathrom curtains.

Heat and dehumidifer in the winter. Who wants a damp boat!!

It's not just about mildew. Wood delaminating. Veneer comming off. Yuck and slime. Stop it before it starts.

It will be out with the Starbrite stuff over the Easter weekend, if I don't shove the whole canopy into a washing machine, a nuisance as it then needs reproofing.

Spores must lurk somewhere and be killable there. Polycell do a good biocide that does not have bleach in it.

Andrew - I was intending to 'truck-cleanse' and pressure wash my canopy, followed by re-proofing when it's dried out.

You reckon it's OK to slam it in the washing machine ? I assume you've done this in the past without a problem - does your canopy contain plastic 'windows' ? Mine does, and I'd be worried about the washing machine kn@ckering them. Is it OK to do give it the old Hotpoint treatment ?

(With apologies to all for slightly off-topic post !)

I've had a service wash once, at a place that normally did big duvet covers commercially, and once in a launderette in Walton on Thames. Cool wash, a few minutes in the tumble dryer and seems OK. Lots of Fabsil type stuff afterwards. Windows in canopy seemed OK.

Watch out for shrinkage, I put the canopy back on while it was wet and fastened it down until it was dry before reproofing.

I'll be pressure washing using the whirly brush and lots of Starbrite over Eater, with the machine wash option if needed.
