Mikuni heating leaking fumes what to look for?

Ran the heating over the weekend and although it got hot it was smelly and smoky in the cabin. We couldn't keep it on.

We don't use it very often, I don't know if that has a bearing on it but I suspect there is a leak inside the unit. (I suppose that is stating the obvious /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif )

Is there anything I can check?

was the wind blowing the exhaust fumes below , if not i would check the exhaust system joints

No I dont think it was windy. The fresh air is taken from the engine bay so not really the best place, however the worst I would expect is an engine/oil type smell and not fumes.

I do need to run some inlet pipe from an air vent or somewhere a bit nicer, but this was actually smoky. The exhust would have had to blow around the stern and then into the engine air vents and then to the front of the engine bay.

Could be any one or any permutation of:
Accumulated crud from lack of use burning off.
Combustion exhaust leak being drawn into the heated air.
Damaged / corroded heat exchanger or gasket allowing combustion products to mix with fresh air.
You say it was smoky, was the exhaust skin fitting also smoking, if not and the exhaust is “clean” then that would point more to the burning off of crud or perhaps something near the heater getting drawn into the fresh air intake.

Had a similar experience with mine a few years ago, no leaks anywhere. Turned out to be some oil had leaked onto the exhaust pipe and lagging right by the heater which then caused lots of fumes as the pipe heated up which were then drawn into the fresh air inlet . Cleaned the lagging and pipe and problem solved.

Hope your solution turns out to be that simple. Certainly worth checking.

We have a Mikuni (it replaced an eberspoacher) and experienced the same problem, turned out to be crud a section of the hose we reused distributing the air, replaced it and no more problems.
