I'm not sure if what I'm looking for even exists but I'm sure somebody will know of a workaround if not?

I'm trying to connect/hotspot more than one device to my phone at the same time via wifi aboard my boat which can't be done! So is there a device that I can connect my phone to via hotspot that will allow the data on my phone to be used by multiple devices all at the same time?

Failing that I'm guessing I'm going to need a mifi gadget? Can anybody recommend one along with a data sim? I'll be connecting my plotter, Ipad for the Navionics app, streaming movies and watching TV etc. :encouragement:

Hi

I have a mifi which you can connect multiple devices to. If you want to use your phone as a hot spot for multiple devices I think this will solve the problem. You need to set it to extend mode. All devices will connect to this device which will connect to your phone to provide the Internet connection

TP-Link AC750 Dual Band Wi-Fi Travel Router (Support Router Mode/Hotspot Mode/Range Extender Mode/Client Mode/Access Point Mode, 1 USB 2.0 Port/1 Micro USB Port, 1 WPS Button, UK Plug (TL-WR902AC)) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01NAYG15H/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_VF4DAbH9W0KTT

I have a three mobile contract with quite a lot of data allowance and I can tether quite a few devices to that if I want.

I've also got a mifi dongle on EE I got from Argos a few months ago - mainly for work as I travel a lot but that's pretty good. Cost £50 and came with 2gb of data for three months and then you just top up when you need it after that of which there are various packages not all that expensive.

As an aside, what plotter do you have? I've got a raymarine e7d and I can connect that to my phone and then connect everything else to that via wifi.

Cheers

Would you believe it I have the same plotter! I've not long had the boat and I'm still getting to grips with the plotter! So are you saying that once my phone is connected to the plotter via wifi I can then connect other items to the plotter such as my Ipad which can use the data from my phone at the same time?

What phone do you have, I have an android phone which allows at least 5 devices hotspotted.. most of the 4g hotspot devices (modem only not phone ones) allow 15 to 20.. so I'm confused as to why you need another device to do this? Do you have more than 5?

Yes that’s exactly it.

If you go online and google raymarine lighthouse user guide it should provide all the info on there but it’s fairly simple. Just pair your phone with the plotter and then you switch on WiFi sharing on the plotter. The plotter gives out its own WiFi address and you just connect everything to that.

That's very helpful thank you! :encouragement:

Steve I have an Iphone 6 which I can hotspot a device to but as soon as I hotspot another device to the same phone it disconnects the one that is already connected? Is there a setting somewhere to connect/hotspot more than one device at the same time?

I have an iphone 6plus and I regularly have 2 other devices connected simultaneously. It may well be restricted by your carrier. For instance when you're using a PAYG sim most don't allow any hotspot connections.

My sim with EE on a contract!
Is there a setting on the phone that allows more than one device to be connected at once?
My plotter connects to it as soon as I switches on. If I turn on the Ipad and go to the settings, connect to my phone the plotter disconnects and visa versa? It must be something I'm doing wrong?

I just checked my phone and there's nothing in the settings to restrict or enable multiple settings. Just turn on Hotspot. As a test I just connected 3 devices now and no problem doing it.

My HTC allows you to select the max number of connected devices up to 8 and can set it to allow or ban certain devices.

The 4g hotspots I own and have used in the past for data only when traveling (no longer used as phone does the same now) allowed 15 to 20 connections

Sounds like a network restriction or some setting is wrong somewhere. I have never owned an apple device so can't help there...

Currently sitting aboard having reconnected my plotter to my phone via hotspot rather than my phone to my plotter via WiFi! Now I’m able to connect everything to my plotter including the very Ipad I’m writing this on - perfect!
So my next question!! I’m hearing a tapping sound coming from my transducer in the hull, I’m pretty sure I’ve not heard this before? Have I pressed something in the menu on the plotter somewhere (Raymarine e7d) I can only hear it when its quite aboard and the plotter is switched on.

Have you got an Eberspacher heater running?
