Either in the shops or on the web?

Been to the local electrical shops, but they all seem rather large.

Any Info would be greatly appreciated by SWMBO!!! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Got one last year in Makro for about £25. Normal size and normal domestic kind in stainless steelish finish. We haul it out of a locker on occasion and actually use it but cos we have the gas on board its really just a back up. Tesco sell em too as do Asda but maybe you want something more boaty or more high tech? in which case its bigger bucks again..?

Thanks Ian and Roy.

No we are not looking for anything high tech, Just plain and simple, doesn't even need to look too smart.
I am heading to Asda this morning to buy a big shopping for the boat, so will have a look there, and good idea, Maybe Makro is worth a look also.

Caravans shops i though i would avoid at the moment, thinking the prices might be a bit inflated!!!

Alistairr, it really depends on what you have on the boat already.

If you have a hob and oven then a simple microwave will do £25. But, the modern jobs that are combo's are excellent (in that you do not really need a hob or oven)and you can run them off shore power or gennny.

We currently only have a Gas hob.
When you say "the modern jobs that are combo's are excellent".. What Else do they do???
We have full shore power, plus while out of the Marina we use a Honda 2kw Genny.

A, go for one with a grill, very useful, specially if you dont have an oven. We used to have a silly gas oven and dont miss it a bit,

Unsure if 'smaller' exist???? You would need to have smaller plates perhaps and small burgers and tiny hot dogs and then you would be so hungry that you would have to do two of everything and so would be better having two mini micros or one big one so i think a full size will be best. Anyhow, you are a big hefty chap and need your strength to cope with the parental rigours ahead and to deal with cheeky people like me!?!?

Just this lunchtime I was in the local Comet looking at their small microwaves, I'm after replacing mine for one with a grill. The microwave fits under the hob and I'm restricted on size.

Below are three contenders, I think they were all around the fifty to sixty pound area:

Sharp r-654 282 x 449 x 388
Samsung ce283gn 275 x 489 x 398
Panasonic nn-k123m 282 x 484 357

Having just checked my measurments the Sharp is the only one that would fit my hole - no funny comments!!

If you're after a good price you may want to check out this microwave with grill I would have gone for it if it had been an inch shorter.

Anybody know if these quartz grill things (1000W) are the same as normal grills? Only really need it for toast and the like.

Cheers

Great Reply, thanks.

I am going to have to convert those size to Inches, for them to mean anything to me though,,, And no i'm not an old man!!

The one you linked to seems great value, but looking at the same one on Curry's web site, i'm not too sure if it has a grill oven or not.

Judging by the replies, a grill oven would be best to get.

Thanks

Alistair.

Re: Microwave Recommendation Please.

Ailstair,

Two out of three any good???:-

* Small (relatively) 304x510x477(H/W/D) = 11.96" H x 20.00" W x 18.77" D
* Light - yes uses inverter technology rather than a transformer
* BUT cheap - No, Comet wanted £199, when Currys had any they were £169.

Story: I had a huge Tappan circa 1975, still going strong, but hernia inducing every time I moved it. Time to go...

Looked around, decided Panasonic NNA 77x series had most possibilities, SWMBO sid "won't use grill or convection oven, only want basic machine don't waste your money. Went ahead anyway.

NOW SWMBO doesn't use microwave feature, but thinks oven and grill are sliced bread syndrome (which we don't eat anyway). Don't you love 'em!

Anyway points to consider:-
<ul type="square">[*] No point in having a small / low powered microwave as they effectively a contradiction in terms, M'wave only really wins if it is faster than conventional methods.
[*] Not a lot of point in going for el cheapo units as some will be less efficient / slower (as above)
[*] better design should allow you to do combination cooking, meaning that you can set the parameters for mixed cooking and enjoy your G&T in peace. For example, I like "proper" baked potatoes, soft inside, crackly skin. Only way to do that quickly is micro the inside, grill the outside. The Panny will do that with one set up; short course on programming, press the tits and stand back.
[*] From what I gather this is to be your main machine, so £200 squid is cheaper than a full blown range - but puts the expense in some perspective.
[/list]

I have an awful feeling I've said most of the above before, here.
