On the news, Mexican Navy square rigger the Cuauhtemoc hit the Brooklyn bridge in New York last night, Bridge too low masts too tall. Yards were manned by the crew at the time.
2 killed 19 injured so far. An awful thing to happen.
A video online shows the ship driving astern under engine power as she goes under the bridge.

Saw Cuauhtémoc leave London in 2023 with the yards manned (at least until the brass disappeared and everybody could relax a bit - it took a while to actually leave the dock). Good looking vessel, very smartly presented - you could tell they took pride in it.

Such a shame for this to have happened. I'm sure there'll be more than a few people aboard wondering if they could have done something different, but it's easy to be wise after the fact.

I saw that in a later photograph she had both anchors down. Having bashed her way under the Brooklyn Bridge she apparently grounded briefly and at some point they must have let both anchors go, which was just as well as she bought up very close to the Manhatten bridge, the next bridge up River. Couldn't have happened at a worse time with the crew manning the yards. :(
