Mevagissey Mussel Farm

Last weekend, we strayed into a new very large mussel farm just off Mevagissey. It lies more or less on the line Mevagissey-Fowey.

It is marked by four yellow boys similar to the ones used for "occasional" markers for races etc. What was really scary were the grey (!) cylinders that held up the mussel ropes (looked like fenders, the colour of the sea) and the massive lines just below the surface of the water.

We downloaded an update to the Navionics charts and they appeared there (they were not on a 6-9 month old edition). Below is a screenshot.

We pass through it unscathed, but it was scary in very benign conditions. I wonder how long before someone gets stuck into it. I am sure the Fowey Lifeboat guys are likely to be busy soon, there.

Thanks for the early warning. The similar developments in St Austell bay always seemed designed to obstruct the maximum amount of navigable water. Heigh ho.
Mariners should not be put off, the anchorage to the north of Gerrans Point is well worth the diversion.

I'm afraid we were put off, a couple of years ago, when trying to get to Phoebe's Point from Polkerris. Someone on here had posted a photo of ??Silvermine beach ?? which looked idyllic in the right conditions. Unfortunately, we were faced with what seemed like an un-ending line of mussel bed buoys, not marked on my paper chart which was relatively new.
I'm afraid we turned and ran. Shame really.
