I would like to construct or have constructed a pushpit for my boat. Stainless is pricey and requires specialised welding equipment e.g TIG .
Do the forumites have any other suggestions for a suitable pipe material to use considering the enviroment it will be subjected to.

Many traditional boats, such as Hillyards. used galvanised water or gas pipe very succesfully. It is important that threads are only cut as far as is necessary so that ungalvanised metal is not exposed. This forms a tough and diurable assembly, at least as strong as its stainless counterpart.

If you can stick weld you can TIG weld its a lot easier but stainless wire is pricy and you need to use argon as gas sheald.

Galvanised pipe is exellent and if painted can outlast stainless but only looks right on older boats.

If you want classy and no welding you could laminate a wooden top rail and then use S/S stanchions to suport it.

You Can stick weld stainless I do both stick and TIG welding of stainless. The main differance is it is possible to get slag included in the stick wels where as no slag in TIG there fore TIG tends to be stronger for same size weld bead. With stick just use thicker bead.
