Scouse Mouse set sail from Milford Haven on May 1st this year. On May 5th at 7 a.m., she was knocked down in the Bay of Biscay. At the time, she was in the vicinity of the "Brittany" offshore met buoy and I've just been able to get a copy of the relevant historical wind and wave data. I've added some more basic data of my own and offer it for the interest and entertainment of fellow travellers.
Boat details:
- Pandora Mk1, LOA 21' 10", LWL 18' 9", Beam 6' 11", Draught 3' 3", Displacement 2427 lbs, Ballast 980 lbs, Ballast ratio 40%. (30% with 750 lbs of food, water and gear).
Location:
- Off soundings in the vicinity of Brittany deep water met buoy (47.50N, 8.40W).
Sailing:
- Reaching at average 6 knots by GPS under double reefed main. Self steering. Skipper in cabin. All hatches closed.
Weather:
- 30 knots wind Force 7.
Sea state:
- 5.5m swell.
Incident:
- Knockdown. Mast horizontal.
Damage:
- Negligible. Minor bend in wind generator pole. Ten litres of water in the bilges.
Personal assessment:
- Not a rogue wave. Similar force to previous waves. No crash, a gentle rollover. Nothing heavy broke loose. Delayed righting for about ten seconds, probably due to immersion of the mainsail. Nothing to worry about on this occasion (other than being cold and wet).
