As promise our report on Messilonghi marina .
With six month to report on their quite a lot to say .
I will break this up in two part so people don’t get bored and stop read it as I feel it importation if you’re planning to come to Messilonghi that you read this thought .
Marina …. As said before , it is place in a lagoon away from open water so it a very safe place to leave your boat for the winter as no seas build up,
the marina itself is more of a boat yard then a marina , with bits of metal and wood and rubbish left all over the place , safety in the marina isn’t taken seriously by the management , there was once an fire extinguisher at the end of each pontoon one now lays in the yard and the other two looks as if they not been looked at since the day they were put there , there no ladders to climb out of the water or life buoys, part of the hard standing is under water thought-out most of the winter and in some places the ground looks as if it could give way at any time sending boat on their side .
There are two toilets and shower blocks each hold three shower and three toilets for men and women, in early November one block overflowed and sewage poured over the yard , this happen four days in a row before the marina shut it down the sewage was washed into the lagoon each time the reason we was told was an electrical fault , the real reason the tanks where over full with sewages and they refuse to have them empty, it now April and there just been reopen but so far they have not been empty
There was weeks when we had no hot water in the shower because they was relying on the solar heating ( this was mid-winter ) after enough people complained the immersion heater was turned on , for weeks the toilet and shower wasn’t cleaned it became a health hazard , in the end people stop using the toilet once again only after enough people complained and every one sent email to the marina that anything was done , it turned out that the cleaners wasn’t being paid .
Bins at time of writing are overflowing rubbish all over the yard.
The free internet which is boosted by the marina was intermission when we got here within a month it didn’t work at all , first we was all told that someone would fix it , after months of this tale we was then told someone stolen the Ariel off the roof , by the end of February when I ask Yannis when was it going to get fix the story changed again I was told that he was going to sign some document to get money release to pay the bill . it wasn’t till the three week in March that the internet was on.
Management …. The marina has three shareholders Jo so I understand 47.5% Yannis 47.5 % and the local port /town 5 % , an on-going court case has been going on for quite a long time now and I have been told by Jo at less once a month that it will be sorted by the end of that month and a new manager appointed , six month on and nothing changed.
The marineio …. The three that work in the day time may just as well not be there , there time was spend most of the time fishing with a spear rod aiming it at fish eating of the bottom of boats at times hitting the gel of the boats the fish was eating from , other time there time was sitting about smoking drinking or on their phone , for the information of people who have left their boats in the water over winter you have to thank the liveaboard for the safely of your boats , it was then who sorted out rope that came loose readjusted bow lines and pulled in sails that started to work their way free , if it wasn’t for them I think some would be returning to damage boats in my view there are the most unprofessional marineio I have ever came across I suppose the reason for this is because what they really are is builders labours and no training have been given to them plus there probably not paid much .
The office staff… mata who been appointed to run the office does the best she can but has her hands tied although we been told that she is running the on-going day to day running of the marina in reality she not , Yannis and his marineio are running the show no matter what the court say or any one else .
While we been here the port police have been called in several time once when Yannis assorted an office staff another time when a yachtsman was assorted by a women father who Yannis pays to sit in the office to spy on other member of the staff , ( what did this yachtsman do to get assorted one ask ?) he asked her what her job was , yes that was it .
