Messilonghi Anchorage

...local bye-law that boats are not allowed to anchor in the fairway...

And a not unreasonable one, but 100m from the western shore, which is where they rousted us from is a long way from the 'fairway'. The reason we were given was that it was 'too dangerous because of the wash from passing vessels'; as we were planning to leave that day anyway I didn't bother trying to debate the point, we just spent our €uros on doing the shopping and buying a few boaty bits elsewhere.

The Marina now has a new manager...I`m told......and `the season `has now started... Could the two events somehow be linked?...And....after all...its a long way to go up that river without finding somewhere to stop at the end of it....Of course...it could all backfire..with nobody bothering to visit when the only prospect is an outside possibility of a visitor`s berth that is not connected to the shore...and has no services...and attracts full price rates..

If a ship is expected this is what they do. If no ship, then they are happy for you to anchor. That's a perfectly reasonable response.

As for the town Quay, you really need to watch out for the gipsy's who will have anything if it is not tied down locked and bolted - there is a tear away family and we had real trouble from them.

Peter - Generators - well I for one would be pissed off if you ran the Gen at unsociable hours!!!

Messy Town is a great place - truly Greek, and good eating at the right places.

We have known the same thing in NE Spain. For no reason whatsoever, an authority figure seems to get the urge to flex his muscles and clear the anchorage. In the Spanish case there is no nearby marina, which seems to rule out commercial kickback.

Also happened in Sicily to us; about 30 Italians boats of all types including ribs. We were the largest and the only one requested(ordered) to move. We did.

Not any more

...town quay is available, usually has space and does have water. It can be a bit noisy around the little taverna/cafe but it is free.

As of this spring and I gather at times last autumn too they were charging €12-20/night depending who you spoke to; besides which it can get a bit bouncy on that quay when the afternoon breeze kicks up.
