Looking for some local knowledge...

We're likely headed there (Mersea Quarters) on Saturday from Shotley and will have a family joining us. If we grab a buoy at Mersea Quarters is there somewhere we can take the tender and BBQ? I usually find it best to give the kids a chance to run off some energy ashore.

If not BBQ there can we just get ashore somewhere?

East Mersea- Mersea Stone, great for BBQ & anchor in The Pyefleet of off the Stone

Cudmore Grove is great for a good walk ashore....and you could catch the Ferry to Brightlingsea if you wish!
 
The pontoon is there for the tender, but if you don't want to bother with that, the WMYC Launch will take you ashore... It's a short walk along the front, past WMYC, boatyards, Victory pub to "Monkey Steps" beach... If you grab a bite in WMYC, the price of the launch is knocked off...
 
I am surprised that nobody has mentioned the Beson at the end of the beach. You can almost step ashore, and it is convenient for both the Village and the hard/Yacht Club.

On Sunday The West Mersea Lions are having a run/jog/walk race around the island , and they will come along to the end of the beach and onto the boardwalk, where I shall be marshaling

Presume the words should be pay for a buoy these days...
 
Time for some real ‘local knowledge’.......

How big is the boat? If it’s 30’ or more, the Club launch YC 1 ( call on channel 37, ‘why see one’) will find you a mooring. Ask for one in the quarters, then if you ‘look left’ as you go in to the quarters, you can take your dinghy to Shingle Head Point.

It’s shingle beach and quite steep to, ideal for a barbecue and to stretch legs. Years and years ago, when I was a cadet taking part in Mersea Cadet Week, we used to be ferried there by the support boats for the Thursday night barbecue (they haven’t done that for some years, ‘Elf and Safety’ I think).

Yes, there is a modest charge (£10 up to 35’) for a buoy, but it goes into the Harbour Fund and pays for the placement and upkeep of the channel buoys and so on, West Mersea not having a Harbour authority or a Harbour Master as such.

As my learned friend above says, the WMYC launch will take you ashore to the main hammerhead pontoon. The service runs from 8.30 am to 11.00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and 8.30 am to 9.00 pm on Sundays. There is a small charge made for a trip ashore in the launch but if you eat at WMYC’s excellent restaurant, or buy drinks from the bar and show your receipt, the return trip is free.

We're 34ft. I've stayed MQ before - quite happy to pay for the mooring too.
A shingle beach (Shingle Head Point - is that the point adjacent Tollesbury Fleet) sounds fine, as does the East Mersea option. I'd forgotten about the beach at Mersea Stone. I've seen boats anchored there too - does anyone know what the holding's like for an overnight stay? Or should we anchor in Pyefleet (which I have done several times before but a good few years ago)?
As always, the ECF has a wealth of knowledge - many thanks all.

I’d suggest anchoring or picking up a visitors buoy at the mouth of Pyefleet; there is good landing at the seaward end.
 
So, in the end we went from Shotley to Mersea Stone. We anchored just off the beach and used the tender to get ashore for a BBQ. Apart from being somewhat chilly as the westerly breeze became northerly it was ideal. Went for a pleasant Sunday morning stroll around Cudmore park then a good sail back up the wallet.
All in all a good weekend.

Thanks to all for the sound advice. ECF at its best ....
