Hi,

I'm looking at trading my present Ranger R-25 on a Merry Fisher 855.

I prefer the serviceability of gasoline, the layout of the MF 855, and the open access provided by the STBD door.

But, living in South Florida and boating in essentially a closed boat, underway air conditioning is absolutely essential.

The factory optional air conditioning is well suited to our needs, but is dockside only.

Has anyone fitted a generator to the 855? I believe she needs about a 4kw, and I would prefer a marine water cooled unit to an air cooled RV conversion.

What brand generator would you suggest? Where do you suggest I mount it?

Thanks for the help. /Stu

Small petrol powered -try Wallmart ?
http://www.walmart.com/c/kp/portable-generators these will be niosey ,but sit it in cockpit -cheap as chips :)
Alternatively for a better install try next generation -not far from you -but diesel -fitted properly will need water in seacock ,exhaust through the transome ,a diesel tank and some battery power ,with a means of charging it up .,remote cabling to wheel house for control pannal .-bit more involved .
Here's the link http://www.nextgenerationpower.com/marinegen.html

Something else to think about "gasoline "boats and sparks = BOOM ( explosion )
You are gonna need this -------
"A version is now available that is Ignition Protection Certified for use in gasoline powered vessels. "

Thank you for suggestion - but I have a Diesel inboard boat now - and I'm done with inboards and done with Diesel. Took her to an authorized dealer for a Yanmar service advisory install, they took it apart and couldn't get it working again. Yanmar suggested I truck it, at my expense, a few hundred miles to Yanmar distributor who admitted that they didn't have the needed test equipment and had no idea what was wrong. So, I fixed the engine myself.

Nonsense, it is impossible to keep my inboard running in South Florida with the dealers near me. So, I take my losses and buy an outboard equipped boat that anyone can service. I've put about $11,000 into my boat in under a year, mostly fixing stuff the various mechanics stepped on and broke while working on relatively simple problems.

I'll take my chances with a gasoline outboard - but am still looking for a generator I can fit into the available space.

I am attempting the exact situation with my 855 that I will take possession next week. Hopefully my Honda eu2000i plus a smart start system by Dometic will work. The smart start system reduces start amps by 65%

Honda eu2000i runs AC unit without any problems. Just got my Merry Fisher 855 and stayed on it last night. Generator worked great!

You may find it useful to have a read of the report and annexes published on this UK government website. It's probably essential reading for anyone installing/converting a portable generator on a boat. https://www.gov.uk/maib-reports/carbon-monoxide-poisoning-on-motor-cruiser-arniston-with-loss-of-2-lives The installer of the genny in this case got a suspended prison sentence, but will likely live with the guilt of what he did/didn't do for years to come. There's some very useful pointers and tips in the report to check back against.
Hope it helps. Safe boating folks. Have fun in the sun.

Rob
