hi, this is the probem:

mercury 40 bluband, no lower gearcase ('cos some sod's nicked it!) no drive shaft.

been offered a longshaft, with a U/S waterpump, but the shaft's stuck in the crank. meaning that i'll have to smash or cut through the leg in order to release the shaft. then can i shorten the shaft? iv'e done small outboards before but i don't know what the drive looks like on the powerhead end, and also how the shaft fits into the lower gearcase.

or where is the best (cheapest) place to get a shaft?

or does anyone have an old merc 40 they need to get out of the shed, (just think of all the space you'll have!)

thanks, steve.
