Have had nothing but trouble from my feul injected 454 from not getting full revs due to leaking exaust valves from new to excesive feul use can you have the chip checked out
Firstly, how do you know exhaust valves leaking?
Any other symptoms? Does it idle sweetly? Is prop pitch correct for boat?
You said it's been like it from new. What has dealer said?
Col when the revs could not be achieved (4600rpm) the prop was changed from a 19p to a 17p this still made only 200rpm change. revs were then 4200 rpm. All this information is from the laptop plug into the map sensor it was also found that feul pressure was to high this was corrected and still no change. A compression test was then completed and found 3 low readings compared across the 8 cylinders so off with the heads and they were tested it was found that 3 inlet valves were leaking and 3 exaust were leaking. All injectors were sent for cleaning and testing and heads re-machined the engine was then dyno tested and came up with 290hp down on the 310hp but we are un sure if thie 310hp rating is without water pump and alternator coupled up. Now the engines back in running a 17p prop and achieving the 4600rpm in a 26ft boat weighing 2000kg loaded with feul and gear. Now the new problem at cruise 3000rpm the feul flow meter a navman is showing 43Lt/hr for 23 knots for a feul injector motor this compared to other naturaly carburetor type mercruisers is quite poor at 2lts per mile at best /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Fair enough.
ECU (chip) is not the likely culprit, more likely to be a sensor (prob temp sensor) giving false readings.
You can check them out manually if you know what resistances to expect, but much better to get a Mercury dealer to plug into the diagnostics and see what that reveals. Should be FOC if still under warranty.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.
