The boat I bought recently came with a n 8Hp 2 stroke Mercury outboard - it looks like it needs a good service. Could anyone point me in the direction of any useful information on serviceing this type of engine, and if anyone knows what sort of spark plug I would need for it that would be vvery useful

Thanks
Tim

The best way if you intend to do the servicing yourself on a regular basis is to purchase a mercury service manual as I did.
Basicaly at the end of the season wash the whole thing down with fresh water and flush with fresh water, drain gearbox oil and replace, clean fuel filter bowl and plastic filter, and change the plugs,I also spray alot of the inside with WD40 as this leaves an oily residue after the spirit has evaporated .You can purchase some laying up fliud which they say to leave in the cylinders over the winter but I have never tried this, or you could just take it to a dealer and for about £50 he will sort it out.

The plugs you require, depends on what year the engine is but to give you some idea:

1994-1995 Mercury 8hp ----------- NGK BP8H-N-10 Standard plug
OR--------------------------------NGK BPZ8H-N-10 Radio Suppressed plug

Plug Gap ----------- 0.040in. ( 1.0MM )

hope this helps philip
