Hi all

I've just bought a boat with a Mercury 50 outboard attached.
It was running great for about half hour then started to hesitate, hold back then slow down. We slowed right down for a couple of minutes, had a quick look over it whilst still under way, then tried it again. It was fine , it picked up and ran fine for another half hour then it did the same again. this is continuing to happen.
Any suggestions on what it might be please?

Cheers

Syd

Almost certain to be some form of fuel starvation Syd, was the tank breather fully open, are the fuel lines in good condition and not slowly collapsing and have you checked any filters?

Suspect it will be something simple like this.

How you keeping?

Now you mention it, I checked the fuel level in the tank by taking off the filler cap and peering in. There was an audible hiss as I released the cap. I could'nt see a breather on the tank though. Think I might lift the whole thing out and have a look.
Cheers

The only things that can go wrong intermittently running wise are fuel (as LJS says) and ignition. Fuel is much more likely. There should be a breather screw on tank filler cap (if original merc) and this must be open, there shd be no hiss when you remove the filler cap. If nothing obviosu like this then carbs need a service probly

Hi Syd - Lets start at the beginning, given the likely assumption that it has something to do with fuel.

Is the bottom of the tank clean or dirty, 'cos thats where the riser reaches.
Does the little fuel vent open properly (on top of the filler cap)
Are the fuel lines and bulb in good order inside. Good idea to replace them.
Is the fuel filter clean? Any signs of water (usually rusty red/brown colour)
If all these are OK service the carbs.

Not a bad idea to replace the line and bulb anyway, the rubber inside detriorates and crumbles into small pieces and blocks the carbs up.

Had a good rumage through the fuel system. The bulb and pipes have been recently renewed and the bottom of the tank looks clean, there's no breather on the filler cap, I reckon its the wrong one because there's no breather on the tank either. Gonna pop out and get the propper job today. Thanks for your help peeps.

Syd :)

Yeah mate - not bad thanks...

toying with the idea of selling the motor boat and buying a raggie for a year or two...

then again - i dont get enough time to use the one i have, let alone a different one that goes slower!

Keep it moist!

Craig.
