Just bought an old (circa 1974) working 4hp Merc but the ends of the thumb screw/transom tightening bolts are missing. I got a part No off the internet 12-95379 but it looks like they can only be bought in the US. Any way round this? It is the part which actually grips the transom when you tighten up. Also can anyone explain to me (with the help of a diagram if poss) what is supposed to happen when you put the engine in reverse to stop it "rearing up"? Many thanks.

One of my bolts has the washer missing I just keep an old 50p piece handy and jam it between the bolt and the transom of the dinghy. The nuts that hold the washers on are very small and the thread is stripped on mine. check yours are ok before buying just the washers.

A Mercury dealer in the Uk should be able to supply the clamp screw pads. For some reason Mercury policy is that US dealers cannot supply outside the USA.

I'd expect there to be a locking mechanism which you can engage/ release to lock the engine in the down position/ allow it to tilt. I doubt if its an automatic system linked to the gear shift. OYOH i cannot see it mentioned in the manual

You should be able to download the operation manual from the Brunswick Marine download centre http://download.brunswick-marine.com/download/main;jsessionid=105vjo07c1lcd?type=corp but Its not always easy to find the right manual and often better not to specify a year.

I had the same issue with my 15hp mariner. I made 2 thick round washers the same dia as the clamp heads, countersunk the center hole and bolted then on.

The tricky bit was that the old screws had briken in the end of the clamp screw so I had to drill and tap the old ones out first.

If they are the same as these then you can have them.

Thanks Vic,panic over. I put it in my spare Blue Bin and the reverse gear system (however it works!) seems ok. In my old age I was inventing problems! Peter.
