Mercury 4hp tell tale????

I just bought a boat that came witha 4hp mercury. but when i started in water there was no tell tale, should there be or does it just exit through exhaust?

the only info i have is the serial number on which is 9304771

couldnt find any info on the number anywhere!

I know its a twin and made in belgium but thats it...

any help would be great

Oh There are some gaps in the records ... it'll be early 80's (83 or 84 probably)

I'd expect there to be a telltale with an outlet in the bottom cowl somewhere.
(Under the starb'd side a bit behind the gear lever ?)

If it's the 2-stroke there should be a thin constant stream of water from the rear of the leg near the top, and it shouldn't get hotter than luke warm.

These engines suffer from salt build up, I take the head off every winter to clear the cooling water galleries, and run it in fresh water ( wheelie bin with the prop removed ) beginning & end of every season.

Sounds like yours could do with the head off and a good look and clean...

EDIT; just noticed you said TWIN, sorry the above applies to the later single, don't know the twin; are you sure ?! Must be getting on a bit...

having read Seajets post I realise I am looking at a single cylinder engine as well.
I cant find a twin! 4 hp!

its got 4 hp on the case. and the bloke i got it from said it was 4hp.

the serial number is all ive got to go on and i cant find it anywhere!

All I can say is it must be quite old; had an Evinrude 4hp twin, that was secondhand in 1977.

Is there anything which looks as if it may be a telltale outlet ?

i coulnt see anything obvious, which is why i am asking about it, really confused it started and run fine but i turned off pretty sharpish because i didnt see any water.... i dont understand why i cant find anything at all for the serial number online!
