Hi all,

I've bought a Merc 40hp, quite old but runs very well indeed. It's a long shaft and I'm sticking it on the back of a Norman 20 I've bought.

Can anyone offer fuel consumption figures for WOT and also for, say, 1/3 throttle cruising?

We're planning to take it up to the Broads this Summer and I'd like to make sure I can cover a day's cruising with a little left over and without thumbing a lift!

G'day Clive, Firefly James or jfm are pretty clued up on the early Mercs, but just pootling at 4 knots on the Broads, I'd guess somewhere around 6 litres per hour?
Is she on a trailer, moored, or a bit of both?

Hope you have a good season.

Thanks guys. I've got a Yamaha 8a auxiliary, the WOT figures were if I decided to go for a fast run off-shore. The only prob with the Yamaha is shifting the Merc out of the way - it's bloody heavy and while I've got an aux engine bracket, rigging steering for cruising would be well nigh impossible and there is no room on the transom for two lumps.

5 litres an hour cruising eh? Juicy buggers aren't they? 20 litres an hour WOT rings bells from past experience with slightly smaller lumps many years ago.

Rethink coming up!

Can you post some pics of your transom area, somebody may be able to suggest an alternative option?
