Mercury 3.3 avoids the skip!

View attachment 42738View attachment 42738Semi cooked this little outboard yesterday whilst supposedly commissioning same in sheltered waters of Port Grimaud!thankfully just stalled at tickover,hot paint smell and small amount of fumes!left it awhile to cool,googled,ybw'd too and glad I did,as the impellor is up the leg a bit compared to the 'behind the prop' of the 2.5 model.This is to keep the coolant running up whilst this 3.3 model is in neutral.
20 odd years later,t'wasnt going to be an easy job!Right enough got the stud near the anode off ok.before that uncoupled the neutral rod by removing a round rubber bung
However the front bolt holding the leg on was frozen, and despite much striking head on,cajoling back and forth, the head, only the head mind you, sheared off.Off to Monaco Marine in nearby Cogalin.impellor in stock, €16 odd great!
Slept on the problem,by morning the decision to try and unstump the bolt was avoid neatly by instead cutting a step into the lower casing, to allow a new nut and washer to secure the leg end as before!
Well it is 20 years old and its the first impellor it has ever had!rather than go deeper into easy-outs,taps and dies, and more expense,am I forgiven for this expedient mod?
I may be able to upload a piccy, never tried from an iPhone!

I have just saved a Crescent air cooled outboard today, but much easier than yours.

The clamps were frozen and it had not run for 15 years.

I cut off the frozen alloy threaded screws and filed them flat, drilled, tapped to M12 and made up some stainless ones from long bolts.

I had already checked the compression, spark and carb so I was ready to fix it using my new clamps in the piece of timber in the vice and service it.

After a good going over and a new plug it started readily, idled smoothly and re-started when VERY hot first go.

Float level on the Bing carb was iffy, but careful bending of the pivot lowered it enough for it to respond crisply.

A few new S/S fastners, a good clean and a bit of polish and it looks very presentable.

Sort of a modern Seagull....................................

Rotrax,great revival spirit there,like that great movie about the Aussie going to Bonneville t race his ancient "Indian™" motorcycle,cutting the knobbles off his tires and all that,great stuff!
Tomorrow is the bucket of water test for my 3.3 so fing3rs crossed!leg pull Simon,no flames please!

The little 3.3 has now passed the bucket test with flying colours,so hopefully its next 20 years of lightweight use is assured!
Will try to avoid going 4 stroke for as long as possible,though I hear now of some clever hybrid dry-sump models appearing?Oil mist technology from the 1940's or maybe earlier? Was it Norton motorcycles?
