I have a Merc 25hp engine that has been laid on it's side for god knows how long before I got it. what do I need to check before starting it up?

I will give the plugs a bit of a clean, what else do I need to look for?

Two stroke ?

See http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086

Four stroke ? Also check theengine oil and check that its not found its way into the carb, the air intake box or the combustion chambers

Just in case it was laid up with oil squirted into the cylinders or if 4 stroke oil has leaked past the rings it is best to turn it over with the plugs out first, to ensure that you do not get a hydraulic lock and damage the engine on start up.
