Anyone have a manual handy for a mercury 2.2 outboard?
I decided to do a basic service on mine after it went for a swim... the leg gearbox has two oil holes, one at the bottom and a fill level.
The problem is I couldn't get the oil to fill using the top hole, even with a small syringe. I eventually filled it by putting the engine on its side, and filled from the bottom drain hole. Surely there's a better way.

[/ QUOTE ] The usual way is to fill via the bottom hole, until oil starts to come out of the top one. Thats why the oil is sold in squezzy bottles with a tapered spout that you ram in the bottom hole.

Having said that I do fill mine with a syringe because I dont buy oil at chandlery prices and I happen to have a big brass syringe with a long spout that fits throgh the hole.

Vics is right, normal on most two strokes.

To change oil, stand engine vertically, undo and remove top and bottom 'hole sealing bolts'. Drain Oil (into suitable container).

Insert tapered end of New Oil 'squeezy tube dispenser' into bottom hole, and sqeeze. When oil shows at top hole, reinsert upper 'hole sealing bolt' (whatever you want to call it) and tighten.

Remove tube of oil and simultaneously re-insert bottom 'hole sealing bolt' and tighten.

Job done. Amount of oils spilled, negligible. Can be wiped up with a bit of kitchen towel.

Time taken about 15 mins max.
