Just got a bayliner 2655 with 5l mercruiser and alpha 1 drive, couldnt get the boat over the hump speed maxed out at 15mph and 3400revs, tried all trim settings all temps and oil were reading normal.

when got back into the marina opened the engine hatch reved the engine out of gear revs went to 4500 and then rev gauge would jump up to 5000 and then to 3000 /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif.

Turned engine off and can hear like a water hitting hot metal sound from one side of the engine felt the risers the side that sound was from was hot the other side stone cold /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif.

Any ideas anyone?

boat and engine are 2000 models

The fact that one side is cold is not good: this could mean that the riser on that side has blocked up with salt/gunge.

It won't be megabucks to fix now, but if the manifolds and/or risers are leaking or blocked internally and you keep using it, you will destroy the engine.

Best to get it checked out by a mechanic asap, and if leaking, replace both sides as a set.

Not being to clued up on the engine, but would a blocked riser cause the engine to just not have power? and lose what should be half the overall total speed?.

I should change it to happy customer but unhappy boat

There doesn't have to be much of a drop in power for the engine not to be able to push you over the hump: with a boat like a 2655, you need all the beans you can get it planing properly.

The power drop could be a number of things, possibly unrelated to leaky risers, but "water injection" doesn't help, especially if this has been going on for some time, as valves inside etc. might be rusty. You could remove the spark plugs and have a look down the holes.

Was back at the boat today gave it a good looking over engine wise let it heat up just a little and still doing the same, didnt bother to take out for a test spin just incase. Have reported the faults nice little list it is to but when reporting them got the reply of ohhh not good so im guessing that even the dealer thinks its going to cost them.

Does anyone know what the WOT should be for a 2655 with a 5 liter? and a crusing speed? as I was figureing along the lines 22mph cruising and about 30ish at WOT

Thanks for the suggestions and I used them in my letter that i left on the boat for the engineers and when repoting the boat faults to sales staff.

After treading your post yesterday, i haven't been able to reply till today.
Sorry to hear the new boat not going too well, but i'd have thought if it was a stock boat bought from Prossers, they would have supplied a warranty with it, so hopefully they'd get it sorted. Sound like that is the case with your last post.

Hope you get it sorted soon, so as you can start enjoying it.

Cheers

Im pretty sure prossers give a warranty on ALL the boats they sell not just stock. If it is any consolation to Ewan I have found them to be more than honorable in the past (once you get to speak to the right person !!!)

Anyway I hope it gets sorted soon as they have their boat show this week any will no doubt be busy

cheers

Couldn't agree more. A few years back I purchased a 2052LS from Prossers, during the pre delivery service they decided it needed the bellows replacing.....no problem there...routine job... got the boat delivered on time and it was as sweet as a nut for the first five minutes. On leaving the slip I turned hard to port to bring her around and then disaster. Whoever did the job removed the bearing that supports the drive shaft where it goes through the transom and forgot to re fit it. The end result was a burst transom shield, UJ joint and drive shaft and bellows!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif.

After a few days frantic phoning to Prossers they arrived took the boat away and repaired it with no problems. IMHO not a bad deal considering it was a £7k runabout.

They'll sor you out no problems, it might just take a while...I'm on boat number 6 from Stan and the crew and find them, mostly, genuine.

Sorry to hear about your setbacks Ewan....I still think the boats a cracker...it'll be even better when 100%

Cheers

Yes we will be at Largs at the show this weekend maybe see a few of you around.
If you see a tall lanky scruffy person carrying a wee boy with my wife in tow, that'll be me, stop me and say hello.

I might be at the boat saturday or sunday, if the boat is still in the water your welcome to come take a look, it was sitting right behind the f34 thats for sale tucked in the corner at the bottom of the slipway. Thanks for all the advice im hoping its an easy quick fix.

Al there is a targa 38 in the water for prossers weekend looks very nice.

Its possible that the boat was just heavily loaded or you have too high pitch prop on it. I had a similar boat (2651)with the 5.0l.

If we had too much weight on board or too much at the stern the boat wouldnt plane, it would max out about 3500rpm and 15kts. By reducing weight or moving it forward the boat would accelerate to about 30kts and 4100rpm. If I then trimmed the leg out the revs went upto WOT 4800 and speed of about 35kts.

If prossers cant sort it try a smaller pitch prop. From memory ours ran best with a 19" but when very heavily loaded went down to a 17". (I think most were delivered with 21")

I thought that about the weight thing but the boat was empty otther than a full tank of fuel and my father, which i got him to sit up front in the cabin to see if made a difference, it game me 1 extra mph. Might look at changing the prop later if they cant fix it, thanks for that info

Sorry to bring up and old post,

Landlocked was right prop pitch was 21" its been tried with a 19" 5 blade and picked up a lot more speed, prossers are replacing it with a 17" next week. Risers are being seeing to with new gaskets and replacements. I'm glad of the result and turn around time giving the time of year and the show event they had last weekend.

Thanks to all who gave advice and help, hope to be able to see some of you from up here when back out and about.

Glad you have got it sorted. You can give the prop selector on the mercury/mercruiser site in the states a try. It will give you a good idea what will work.

The 'high 5' props are excellent for acceleration but are a bit of a compromise for cruising. Steel developments are doing a decent value aluminium 4 blade-might give you a bit of both worlds?- here.
