Mercruiser motors

Anybody know how I can tell the age of a motor? it is a Mercruiser V8 last two digits of the serial no are 78. Engine & boat are supposed to be 1983 but I doubt it. Motor is alo supposed to be a 4.3 but i don't think V8's came that small. Grateful for any help. Ken

For recent engines you can get it straight from their website. Otherwise ask Grubb at www.oldmercs.com, he'll know
