Bit of an odd 1, whilst digging around the engine bay I notices that the expansion tank on the stb engine was empty so thought I'd top it up, was very surprised when water came flooding out of the bottom.
Upon closer inspection I found a large split in the bottom of the bottle but even more surprising was the lack of any bung on the bottom outlet.
I checked the Mercruiser manual which indicated that the pipe from the header tank went to the top inlet of the expansion tank, this indeed was how mine was set up. The Port engine expansion tank was mirrored to the stb i.e. split with no bung on the bottom outlet.
Is this normal????
One would imagine that the pipe from the header tank would go to the bottom of the expansion tank so that when the water heated up it would fill the expansion tank and then as it cooled would be drawn back into the header?
