Hi,

Mercruiser 2.8L D-Tronic 165 Diesel 1998

Last weekend my power steering belt started slipping/squealing although still working, and on visual inspection the belt had quite a bit of slack. As the belt is new, being fitted only recently at a service, I figured the pump just needs some adjustment to tension the belt again.

So I went out yesterday armed with some tools but can’t for the life of me see how the belt tension is adjusted. The alternator bracket has a simple and accessible bolt and I assume the power steering pump bracket must have the same but I can’t see it. The web hasn't shown any light on this so I wonder if someone can offer some advice and explain how this is adjusted.

Thanks in advance.

Part 22 should be like yours. Shows an adjustment on the lower mounting bolt (4).

If the pulley's seem 'polished' where the belt runs make sure you give them a good brush-up sanding to improve friction and belt grip.

Thanks for that. It does look very similar but I couldn't see any adjustment bolt, but perhaps it's very hidden behind the pulley. I see I'm going to have to get much more 'up close and personal' with the lower front of my engine. I just hope there's room!
And thanks for the tip about brushing up the pulley surface.
I'll try and get out again next weekend.
