Mercruiser 5.7LX with Bravo 3 Trim problem

Hi.

I got my boat last week but have yet to fire her up due to a problem with the Bravo 3 not trimming down.

I am going down (200 mile trip) to have a look at her tommorrow as I am "hoping" it is a solenoid problem that I can resolve myself.

The symptons are that the leg is fully up (how it was when I collected her for trailering).

I tried to trim down but get nothing. Not even a click. Yet the trim up switch fires the trim motor up as does the trailer up button.

From the searches I have done it appears there are also trim limit sensors that are prone to go but the symptoms for that seem to be the reverse (will trim down but only trim up with trailer switch).

Any info greatly appreciated. Including the safest way to test the solenoid. And what connector does what on the solonoid.

really sounds like a dodgy switch.

the trailer switch will not work in 'down' - it's the trim button

trim limiter is a red herring - it restricts the action of the trim up button. that's all.

I would be looking at testing the continuity on the trim down switch

Hi.

There is no down option on the trailer button. It's a toggle switch for up only.

I had the same problem with a volvo leg. Would go up but not down. Thought it might have been a relay but they were fine. In the end it turned out to be the pump. New pump and all fine. About £350.00 inc vat from memory for the parts.

Down circuit inoperative. in/down solenoid does not click (Instructions from Clymer workshop manual)

1) Check the connections at point 6 and point 7 Clean and/or tighten as required.
2) Connect a voltmeter between point 6 and ground. Depress the down button. If no voltage is shown check the down circuit for a loose/corroded connection or damaged down circuit lead. If the connections and leads are good, test the trim switch continuity. If satisfactory replace the down solenoid.

Points 6 and 7 are the connections to the down solenoid 6 being grn/wht although it may vary on your model. If you need any other info then please PM.

Thanks to all the above for your helpful replies.

Managed to get it sorted (well the gentleman whose boat is next to mine did) by bridging the solenoid connections with a spanner. Looked a bit too much like fireworks for my ticker but it did the trick and everything is working now.

I am hoping it was due to her been laid up for the past 2 months with the leg in the trailer position.

Anyhow managed to get some muffs on and she fired up with little or no fuss. So all is well (for now anyway) lol.
