Just managed to cook the starter motor on my Sealine 330 statesman due to a sticking/rusted relay.
Problem is I cannot work out how to remove the top securing nut to the starter motor. Its very frustrating as I can tighten the nut but the spanner hits on the motors casting when trying to undo the nut. Has anyone come across this problem? If so, what do I do/need.
The other issue is how the starter motor got cooked. Surely ther must be some protection to avoid this happening?
Where will be the best place to get another unit or will I be able to have this one re-built.
Thanks guys
Dave

sorry. based near Redditch in worcestershire and moored in Cardiff

then that would be the Welsh mob, I'm sure kwacker,Haydn an' co will be along later with sound advice as to where to purloin, sorry purchase, repair, or exchange said unit.

I've been given to understand that whiskey helps with the expedience of this type of request with this lot.

but keep that to yourself.

Converging.
Try, when you eventually remove the motor!

Autocraft Cardiff
0292 0373555.
They fix them.
Plus if She has got the VM based unit as Tidnock said.
Autocraft specilaise in Land Rover stuff.
The early Range Rover diesels had a VM based unit too!

The starter will come off.

Stick one spanner on the Bolt, then stick another on the first spanner shaft to give leverage and a diffent angle to purchse on.
It WILL come off.
So will some skin off your knuckles!!

We have a spanner specially for this job, you just get one of the right size and heat it with a blowtorch and bend it sideways so the handle had a curve in it laterally, it then fits a treat.

Hurray - the special spanner did the trick and she's off and ready to go to auto electics tomorrow. Thanks to everyone of you guys for your help.

Just to finish the story

Basically what had happened was that the rubber cover had not been replaced over the main lead from the battery. The lead had worked loose and had fallen across the other terminal. This gave the starter the instruction to run. I checked the other engine and it was exactly the same. Full marks to autoelectrics in Redditch who did a fine job of re-building the unit for £150+VAT.
