did anybody know that today is officially Merchant seamen day, and that local authorities are obliged to fly a red ensign from public buildings? They were only informed of this by HM govt. a few days ago and most have not been able to source one of suitable size! I dressed overall for the occasion and I was pleased to see somebody had an enormous ensign up outside their house on the A12 - did anybody else see it?

I was the MN representative at Winchester Cathedral for the "Seamans Service" as a cadet, (guard of honour sorta thing) but that was in the spring. 1st I've heard of a day for all us discharge book holders...

I'm not a discharge book holder but the son of one who saw plenty of service in the North Atlantic and ended up in a lifeboat three times. Any way that I could support this I'd want to, and would be pleased to be forwarded any material /dates available.
(ps I'm the grandson of one too!)

First I've heard, but pleased to hear it. Think I'll dust off my discharge book for a bit of nostalgia...

I'm one of yesterdays MN Navigating Officers, it would have been nice if "they" had told me it was my day - I'll have a drink to celebrate nonetheless.
Does anyone remember T & J Brocklebank, senior company of the Cunard Group?

If this is the case - then its long overdue, I'm fed up of hearing how the few saved us all and no mention of the poor sods who suffered a lonely and terrible death trying to get supplies to this country.
Those that survived found they were off articles and off pay as soon as their ship was sunk regardless how far from land they were.
