I thought I would post this info on the forum in case it helps anyone else.

I was given strict instructions, when I bought the boat that a small quantity of engine oil was added to the injector pump a couple of times per season, in order to keep it well lubricated.

I've always done this, but the tiny dipstick on the side of the unit seems to be of too thin a bore to register a level. Also, although the workshop manual says to add oil, it omits to say how much!

I've been adding my oil using a syringe and clear tubing - no probs. However, yesterday, I noticed after adding about 40ml that the pump unit had developed a slow drip of oil coming from beneath, emerging from what seemed to be a tiny pipe (of only approx 1mm bore or so).

Today, I sought advice from Manfred of Westfield 4x4 in Lancaster (http://www.west-4x4.demon.co.uk/om636/om636e.html 01524 791968), from whom I have had excellent service in the past. He has reassured me that the drip is entirely normal; it's an overflow that ensures the right level of oil is retained in the injector pump's sump.

Apparently, diesel mixes with the engine oil in the body of the pump and, over time, the oil is diluted so needs enriching every so often.

The leak of oil was alarming, but Manfred put my mind at rest totally.

Hope this helps anyone else who has the same engine (fitted to Westerlys of a certain vintage).
