Anybody on the forum from Menorca? or planning to spend time on the island. I have lived there for the last seven years it's a great cruising area. is anybody with me on the little island??

Hi

I'm based in Alcudia Mallorca and usually cruise across to Menorca during the summer.

The reason we chose Alcudia was simply to be near Menorca - Mallorca being a more practical option for flights (especially out of season) and availability of moorings.

When our children were growing up we holidayed in Menorca every year - some years 2-3 times - we love it and it was my dream to have a boat there. However as I mentioned above it wasn't really a practical option so we settled for Alcudia. We now love our corner of Mallorca but I still have an hankering to do a season in Menorca though finding suitable affordable moorings is very difficult. I've been trying to find some details for the small marina in Addaya but without success so far.

We will definitly be back in Menorca this year as we have booked a (non boaty) week in a Villa for all our family in June and hopefully we will be back later in the Summer with the boat to explore some of those wonderful coves & beaches you mention.

Our boat is based in Majorca and we spent our 2006 summer holiday cruising Menorca. We cruised direct from Palma to Mahon where I had prebooked a berth at the Sunseeker marina for a few days. From there, we day boated to various anchorages; unfortunately a persistent SE wind made many anchorages untenable and we seemed always to end up in Es Grau which is a very beautiful anchorage but we would have liked to have visited other places too. From Mahon, we went on to Addaya and Fornells taking in a few anchorages on the N coast. We then went on to Cuitadella but we were disappointed not to find a visitors berth. By this time, the weather had deteriorated and scuppered our plans to spend a few nights at anchor on the south coast so we really had no alternative but to head back to Alcudia via a bit of a rough passage across the channel. From there we returned westabout Majorca to Palma via Soller and Andraitx
Overall, we liked the fact that the anchorages were less crowded than Majorca and the pace of life on Menorca is less frenetic but visitors berths were equally difficult to get. On the downside, the weather did affect our cruising plans and I got the definite impression that Menorca is a fair bit windier than SW Majorca. I still want to do the S coast of Menorca so I plan to go back one day

Yep your right about the wind as we tend to get it a bit more than you. However you may be interested to learn that Trapsa have taken over the old Club Maritimo berths in Mahon with an aditional 60 berths available this is all part of the expansion planed for a further 160 berths planned 2010 and on, however Menorca being as slow as it is I recon 2015 before we have enough berths for all visitors.
I run a training centre in Menorca and so know the island well If you plan to visit give me a call. I'm sure I would be able to help out with the best calas and hopefully a good berth. details on my profile.
We also have mooring buoys in Fornells and Colom which are free to use for an overnight. Not a problem getting one each side of August.

Good to hear from you

We are planning on visiting spring time if the weather forecast is ok.
We are looking for some decent winds for a reasonably quick passage. We will be sailing down from Port Leucate to Menorca.
Then we are not sure where to go yet........

Gskip, thanks for your offer. I certainly will call when we next get there. When we were in Mahon, there were some pontoons right in the middle of the harbour without access to the land but they looked like good places to moor. Any idea who runs these?

You should be fine that time of year as the wind tends to blow right through the bay of Lions down to Menorca. with regard to moorings you won't have a problem Sunseeker Menorca will have space, also Trapsa, and for berths a little more off the the main part of the port try Ribera de Mahon. However if you dont mind a moring buoy or a good anchorage try first stop Fornells a masive natural bay with plenty of mooring buoys no charge, also good mooring buoys in colom both are very well protected so you will get a good nights sleep. Both are on the North coast. as a further alternative on entering Mahon you will see a channel of to your right second starboard mark (Prefered chanel mark red band) take this into what we call the lagoon and anchor 2/3 to the left good sticky bottom and holding in 5m a small channel leads from here into the main port so if you have a tender about five mins to either Es Castel shops bars restaurants or the main port about 2 mins further. If your cruising the island don't miss Calas Covas south coast and Macarella Macaret area south coast stunning callas.
Hope I've helped please PM if I can assist further.

Deleted User. there is a long pontoon running off Isle de Ray in the centre of the port, pontoon has water but no power, also there are two square floating pontoons further down with power. Im sure all run by Ribera de Mahon VHFch9 Call Ribera de Maon and look out for a big grey rib with yellow strobe, Thats ya man. However as just sugested to wn51 the lagoon is also very good and safe with good holding on anchor, well anything up to about 20 knots wind, with a motor yacht. Depends realy on your tender and need to get to bars and restaurants supermarket etc. PM if you need any help or grab my niumber from my web site.

Following our PMs - thanks.
As I said, we will probably be using Mahon as a step to Malta in April.
Look forward to meeting you at the time if we are all in the same place at the same time.

Usually have boatless holiday for couple of weeks in August, been going there for 20 years now. Would love to put the boat in Addaya - perhaps when I retire.
Made an enquiry at Addaya last year - tarrif for 10 to 12m boat 3650€ but have 3 year waiting list. If anyone is interested their telephone number 00 34 971 188871.

Gskip, thanks for the info. Yes you're right on anchoring. There's plenty of room to anchor in the harbour itself which I would probably do next time rather than pay thru the nose for a Sunseeker berth. Though these are close to the action, we did find it slightly uncomfortable to be gawped at by passers by and we would have preferred to have been a bit more secluded

I wouldn't put a boat in Addaya permanently. We found the pontoons in poor shape and the electricity supply very low on voltage such that much of our domestic equipment didn't work. But the main problem is the entrance to the harbour which is a bit tortuous and completely open to the north such that even in a moderate northerly breeze, large waves roll in which make the entrance a bit risky IMHO. In any kind of a moderate or strong northerly wind (eg mistral) you wouldn't want to leave the harbour at all. Much better to moor in Mahon IMHO where the harbour is large enough to find a calm day anchorage in virtually all conditions

Hi GSKIP - We spent two weeks earlier this year in Majorca visiting: Pollenca, Alcudia and Soller. Was considering a trip to Menorca! Good to have you contact details, some very useful advice, thanks for the post.
