I've got the week off next week and going sailing from Menai Straits and thinging going IoM/Port St Mary and Ireland....where's the best places from way Dublin to Belfast to go to ? currently thinking of Ardglass ?

Dumb question but what papers do I need for Southern Irland ...SSR Registration, Insurance, Bill-of-Sale and Passports ?

Thanks in advance

Have you considered IOM and Whitehaven. Admittedly, we used to sail out of Fleetwood, but had some great weeks pottering between Douglas and Port St. Mary, with the occassional leg to Whitehaven... First time we went, we werent expecting much, and were very pleasantly surprised.

Or head straight for Howth and the little pace just above it?

Just my 2 pennorth

Are you mad or just a plain ploughboy-dumbo?

Exit north through Trwyn Du and then make a decision when Lynas bears 270 degrees ...

Your choices are limitless - Just go west and use the Irish Cruising Club Sailing Directions. (Dickies have them in stock ... and Dickies is not more than 1/2 a mile from your mooring!)

Birgitta (Port Dinorwic)

CO 26 as well

We sail all the year round /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif and Ireland used to be 1st stop till Guinness went above £3 a pint ... Now we hurtle to Islay where Dublin Guinness is £2.05 a pint. (EU tax differentials at work)

Or O\'Kells

at £1.58 a piint

(Not a fan of the new harbourmaster in PSM. Next time we're off to Peel where the non-IOM caught kippers grow /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif )

Re: Or O\'Kells

Was in PSM in april and found the harbourmaster very nice and helpful...
and a pint of O'Kells went down great sitting in Douglas overlooking the marina in the spring sun.
So Whitehaven is a place to visit in the Irish Sea? After two charter weeks from Conwy we are looking for new possible destinations... what about Portpatrick, can it be entered with a finkeeler?

PS: Dun Laoghaire town has had a major redevelopment renaissance so lots of interesing places to go within walking distance of the marina (eg live theatre, cinema, twee shopping, rail access to city centre beside marina, coffee shops, etc). You can also now moor right up in Dublin city centre at the IFSC by waiting for the toll bridge opening times (1100 and 1500 I think). Access to everything within walking distance, theatre, trinity college, museams, Dublins new street cafees, temple bar, and light rail near by.

Thoroughly jealous

But none the less

Try Ardglas nice little town, the marina is some sort of co-operative thing but very friendly.

From there go to Carlingford - don't short tack up the lough cos the border runs down the middle and you get fed up of raising and lowering courtesy flag.

Marina is good - used to be run by a chap called Rowan - great character. mile or so from town but some nice pubs there worth walk or taxi fare.

Malahide - good modern marina - entry can be fun - well marked but buoys could be bigger (or maybe I needed new glasses) - very shallow over the bar. Nice town with all you need plus Dart service to Dublin and elsewhere.

Wouldn't worry too much about papers - no-one every asked me for any - which is just as well cos I never carried any.

Definitely Ireland instead of IoM, if weather and funds allow.

Howth is lovely and if you have a lady friend with you then be sure to treat her to a night in the Abbey Tavern. It is also the cheapest marina in the area and has one of the best yacht clubs I have ever been to. Dun Laoghaire marina is megabucks.

As said, you can get up the Liffey to Dublin City Moorings in the centre, though it is quite noisy being next a main road. It's nice to sit on your boat though with a beer in the afternoon and watch everyone going to work, knowing they are looking at you thinking "I wish I was doing that instead of doing this"!.
Make sure you are very close to the East Link bridge when it opens. I incurred the wrath of the bridge keeper this summer by taking too long to get through and he made it quite clear what he thought of me!

No papers needed for Ireland.
