I just moved my boat to the Menai Strait and I would welcome suggestions of nice places to explore and anchor for a bit of late season pottering. I came in via the south entrance so I spotted anchorage by Abermanai Pt and currently in Victoria Dock, but thats a far as I have got so far.

many thanks, Colin

If you want the lowdown on the Menai Strait, forumite Kawasaki runs a training school there and knows it very well. worth spending a couple of hours with him to learn the tricky bits.

It will be an experience you never forget :)

How far can you get? The Isle of Man is worth a visit. Plentt of council moorings scattered around the island (although none protected from every direction) & 2 marinas, both tide constrained.

HI Loads of great anchorages all round Anglesey beautiful beaches, just a matter of checking the forecast wind direction go north in southerlies and south in northerlies, the Swellies are not a problem providing you follow the sailing direction you can download or I think Mark has them in the Victoria lock house.

God conveniently created Anglesey square so it’s easy to find a lee from the weather, regardless of direction. Each of the 4 sides has different topography so lots of opportunities to explore. The island coastline is about 70 miles. There are a few tidal gates, The Stacks, Carmel Head, Swellies and Abermenai / Caernarfon Bar, for example. It will be an unpleasant experience to get these even slightly wrong. Joining NWVYC is a good idea but if you don’t want to cruise in company I suggest that you buy Crusing Anglesey and Adjacent Waters. Lovely waters, hope you enjoy them!

Hi Colin
Do you want a chat and are in Caernarfon? I can share 55 years of sailing this area with you over a great and cheapest pint of real ale in Caernarfon. This is probably one of the best views from a yacht club and is from with the worlds oldest club building for sure.

I will be here from 6 PM tonight.

I will PM details if you want to make contact.

God you know how to set someone up don't you! :encouragement: We keep having to correct our charts as Richard either knocks tops off rocks or digs new swatchways through the sand banks with his twin egg whisks. You need a new dictionary to understand his Scwelsh especially if he hasn't had his new front teeth fitted. It is going to cost Colin a fortune to keep him "refuelled" that is with either tea and biscuits or usually something a lot stronger!:)

Be aware that the visitors moorings shown in almanacs for Port St Mary are not out this year. Still mooring on the Alfred Pier and drying visitors moorings in the inner harbour. Anchoring inside Gansey point is ok but avoid in current south westerlies/south easterlies as very lumpy.

Is there a website or publication with the location of these moorings?
Angus is talking about the council moorings around the Isle of Man not Anglesey. Yes IOM is a great place to visit for a long weekend or week.
Around Anglesey it as David Jackson said the "Cruising Anglesey and Adjacent Waters" guide is good and very worthwhile buying. As for anchorages going Clockwise: Abermenai, Porth Dinllaen, Llandwyn Island, Rhosneiger, Rhoscollyn, Cemaes Bay, Porth Wen, Porth Eilen, Moelfre, Puffin Island will do for starters.
This link is a bit dated but might give you some insight.
