Well we became aquainted with Kwackers some time ago but this weekend was special.:)

We were anchored in Mermaids cove off Llandwyn island after beaching on Saturday in company with about 8 other boats(NWVYC and others). In order to dry out we have to remove our outboard from the cockpit well to avoid damaging the leg.

I was woken at 5.30 the next morning by a strange bubbling sound. On investigation I heard a snort and found a small seal was looking at me having pushed its head through the OB well!

He carried on playing at the stern for some time. I suspect that he has become a little tame and having been fed fish from moored boats.

Would have taken a picture but some silly sod left the SD card in the PC the previous night!

Maybe the real Mermaid of Llandwyn will make an appearance next time.....

Our favourite spot.

My son has swum with a seal there a few times.

Steve we will probably fight for that spot in the future!:)

Tom its an easy approach from the south if you folllow a line about 30 feet off the visible rocks from pilots cove.

The only major rocks inshore are visible in Steves picture just behind SR

However there is another outcrop south of the one intersected by Rushies forestay that is only awash at low tide. About the same distance as the ones visible to the big one on the left. They catch out quite a few boats.

Also there is a cardinal mark close by to another outcrop to the east of the island these are only just awash at spring tides hence the cardinal.

I am now convinced about taking a direct line just south of the Grampian wreck to Pilots cove rather than going all the way out in the bouyed chanel having observed the amount of water and sand around at low tide last weekend.

Will be fine for us + or - 3 hrs hw even without lifting our keel on most tides. Swell permitting of course.

Yes, I still cut across the back of the bar despite the new marked channel out. There is room for 2 boats in there if one of you doesn't mind drying out. I have done it in the past with a previous boat & a pal in a Snappie.

Rock dodging? You really HAVE to try the Skerries Lagoon off Carmel Head.

Thought I knew most of the UKs coast-is this south west Wales?-The Gower etc?

Mermaids cove is just inside Llandwynn Island SE corner of Anglesey as explained by Blueglass.

The Skerries Lagoon is the other end of Anglesey. Look for the Skerries rock light just NW of Holyhead, Anglesey. The lagoon is a deep water anchorage right in the middle of all the rocks & overfalls. GoogleEarth shows it quite well.

There are plenty more hidden gems that are missed by people passing through.
